Okay so then apply to thr regional program in your area which would include all of the smart Wootton students since they will still be in your region and it will have a strong academic cohort. I dont see the problem. |
You know when middle school started lottery, many kids zoned for W schools rejected the acceptance of Takoma park and chose to stay at frost/cabin John/hoover instead as they see the cohort not as strong as the home schools. Splitting county wide program to regional programs does the same. Wootton/churchill kids would think these programs are not worth attending and just stay at home schools. |
I guess all MCPS is doing now is to make W schools even stronger with kids going to Blair staying at home schools. Wootton lost the best talent to Blair in the past. |
| I'm going to say something that may be controversial and p*** some people off. My daughter is a competitive soccer player. We were so excited for her to play for QO in HS which has consistently ranked top 5 in the state. I know they have other high ranked sports teams as well (football, boys lax). How will the new Crowne be able to field competitive sports teams? Will they be able to attract good coaches and will the school even have fields when it first opens? This issue may seem ridiculous to some, but we are looking for scholarship opportunities for our daughter and worried that the good schools won't come to scout at an unknown school. |
This is my concern as well. My kids are pretty well known in the circles that they play in. Opposing coaches know my kids and have given them pointers before games too. The issue is that the new school is in a whole another area, where no one knows who they are. Being established in the area they are, they're given some leeway if they have a bad start or drought because people know who they are and what they're capable of. I did have one of my kids play out of the area recently and it was a pretty bad experience. Where they didn't have time to adjust and ended up getting frozen out by that team. It was partially their own fault for not adjusting but it took a big blow to their self confidence. Luckily we have them playing with their old team again and am hoping to build them back up to where they were before. I'm not sure if the new school will even have a varsity team the first couple of years. |
I know my daughter can be looked at through her club team, but playing for a reputable, top ranked HS has always been her dream. I was thinking the same thing about them being able to field a team the first year or 2. |
Yes this is ridiculous. 1. Schools are about education first and foremost. Your daughters playing soccer is so far down the list as to not be important. 2) it’s a brand new HS. Why would you think it won’t have a field or teachers and staff like every other HS in the county. 3) Do you know how many competitive soccer players there are in MoCo. What even gives you a guarantee your daughter will make the team at QO? |
I think I've heard of cases in other counties, might've been Howard or PG, where students play for teams at neighboring schools if their own school doesn't have a team. I'm pretty sure it was football players from Howard. |
Then that will be their choice and other kids will take advantage of the programs. |
We share the same concerns then. The brand new school isn’t just going to magically provide the same opportunities as the established schools. That’s just a fact and people on this board will just keep saying kids are resilient and they’ll do fine at any school. |
Clearly you’ve gone off the deep end. All of the BS offer AP classes. You could just simply ask what classes are planned for the HS instead of assuming somehow it won’t have an adequate number of classes. Some of ya’ll are just trying to find fault with a brand new HS. |
Schools, including college, isn't just about book knowledge. It's about learning and growing as a person. Exploring things outside of your boundaries. Sports gives players a chance on working on many things that will make people successful in life, the drive to do your best, keep working on improvement, teamwork, communication, etc. Not to mention it helps foster the community spirit. I've seen the advantages that people who've played sports have and is a reason why I wouldn't my kids to participate in them. I don't see Crown as having a lot of school spirit with it drawing from people from outside areas and not having things like competitive school sports. |
There are already regional IB programs. RM is the only countywide one and it should become a regional one as well. |
Looking at the racial data on all 4 options, I don’t have any confidence on Crown. It’s not set up for success. Not being able to offer AP classes due to lack of interest is a common issue . |
