But support kids being bussed to magnet programs please explain why?
I feel like the anti bussing crowd that say little Larla shouldnt have to be on a bus for that long are the same people who would happily bus their kid to a magnet program. |
| Choice. If you want to bus your kid, great. |
I am against all the busing from some areas like Kensington to places like BCC or WJ. Why can't people use their neighborhood schools? |
|
Bring magnet functions and quantum physics to my W school and I’ll stay home.
Rather than bussing anyone all over the county, they need to offer the same courses at all the HS. |
Bingo. Please look at the history of forced busing in the 70s. It was an absolute disaster everywhere it was tried. It would be especially problematic in our highly congested county. Just send kids to schools in their neighborhoods. |
Disaster for whom? https://www.chalkbeat.org/2019/7/1/21121022/did-busing-for-school-desegregation-succeed-here-s-what-research-says/
Just to be 100% clear - many of those who were bussed from more failing schools to integrate schools had significantly better educational outcomes. You can note that it was stopped and failed for many reasons, including but not limited to white flight and outright racism, but it is 100% incorrect, ahistorical and short sighted to say it as a failure for everyone involved. |
You understand not all kids can always attend the school that is the exact closest distance from them, particularly if the high school, middle school, and elementary school aren’t on the same block? Where I live the closest elementary school goes to WJ, closest middle school goes to BCC and closest HS is Einstein. Constantly re-mixing kids feels much more complicated than just letting a kid go to BCC, particularly if it is close enough to ride a bike. |
But I'm for neighborhood schools! |
People who are anti bussing are also anti magnet school being put in silver spring only. They need to put have more magnet schools in other locations. |
|
My old school district had no busses or air conditioning or magnet schools.
We spent the money on teachers and lower taxes/ |
It's incredibly stupid that the STEM magnet is in a corner of the county in the largest high school in the state, which has something like 24 portables. If you moved the STEM magnet from Blair to any other school you'd improve utilization and maybe more kids who can walk to Blair but get bused to Northwood could go to their neighborhood school. If a magnet contributes to overutilization of a school it should be moved. |
| The bussing discussion was 6 years ago. We don't have enough buses or drivers. They should not offer busing to magnets and parents should supply it. |
Your question does not make sense. Magnet is a voluntary program. It's not forced bussing. So not wanting forced bussing to far-away places and having the choice to bus to a magnet program is not inconsistent. FWIW my kid attends a magnet and many of their classmates who live far way prefer not to ride the magnet buses and get to school via carpools. |
Hey, guess what? There already ARE magnet schools in other locations besides Silver Spring! |
Not this again. The magnets are located in east county for a reason. |
