if your kid has many B+, they might be screwed for Michigan, whereas A- will help them.

A few things:
LSA likes well-rounded kids but with a lot of leadership.
LSA likes you to have a very niche or unique perspective on your major/field/area of interest for your essay (more below).
The essay is key - super niche, well researched etc. should take your kid WEEKS.

AO Scoring:
Applicants are rated on a scale of Outstanding, Excellent, Good, Average, Poor.
The following aspects are directly rated in this manner when considering an application: academic performance, educational environment, essays, recommendations, and Awards, honors, leadership, involvement, and service.

What is UMich Looking For?

UMich is looking for students who stand out in their extracurricular involvements, especially in a leadership capacity. The activities and extracurriculars are needed to set high achieving students apart from the crowd of their fellows. Leadership is the key character trait UMich wants to see demonstrated in an application, either through activities or a student’s supplemental essays. UMich is particularly receptive to students whose dissatisfaction with the status quo has led them to address problems to improve their community or environment.

Another key character trait the school looks for is a unique perspective, either in how a student views their intended major, or in how their background or experiences have shaped their outlook. They say “Show us how the combination of course work and related activities inspired original thinking on your part….what kind of person you are and how well you might do in a dynamic, multifaceted campus community.” This uniqueness should relate directly to Michigan; how will your approach to a major or interdisciplinary study add to the campus? How will your unique background and experiences contribute to the campus learning environment?

Because my kid asked when meeting a prof

If the 1st choice major my kid has indicated in Michigan LSA application only had 17 degrees granted from that major in 2022 (per collegeraptor), is that a bad thing? Too low? More competitive? Or less?

What??? 25% of Michigan's freshmen class have below a 1300. And there are even more who did not even submit an SAT.

That is perfectly in-line. Not sure what planet you are on thinking that you need a high SAT/ACT to get into Michigan.

Prior kid got in with 34 ACT, 1 B and the rest As, almost all weighted classes (4.8 something?). Lots of music awards — among best in the state on particular instrument. A little bit of leadership.

Current kid has 1600 SAT and 4.00 GPA, all weighted classes except gym. Interesting ECs/volunteer work. Some leadership.
