DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

There are way more public and charter school families who want access to Jelleff than there are Maret families.

Wow, Hardy MS must pay to bus its students to fields on the other side of the city out of its own budget.

The cost is $800 per round-trip!

Hardy plays its home soccer games at Deal. So this argument that they are spending that on buses is likely for games that would not be home games. Substituting Jelleff for Deal doesn't change that.

Baseball team plays and practices in SE DC.

Where does the Hardy football team play?

How does Hardy soccer team get to Deal?

Hey, it's the "Jack Evans and His Chums" show!

Maret is doing a good job trotting out their AA students and alumni.

Because charlatans and race baiters in DC make every issue - even a proposed bottle deposit law - about race.

The point is it doesn't take an hour to get to Deal for soccer games which was one of the complaints of that particular speaker.

No team plays football at Jelleff.

If you are complaining about baseball fields, you should be lobbying DPR to use the baseball field up Wisconsin in Glover Park as another option.

What about the former Western HS field now controlled by Duke Ellington? Why can’t Hardy use that?

-Why can't Hardy use Ellington field?
-Witnesses response: Ellington Field hasn't been maintained, the grass area is not regulation sized (part of the existing rubber track would need to be cannibalized), and DESA would be responsible for funding renovations to the field. Further, there's no parking lot, lights, or public facilities to allow frequent use by the public.

Maret:
-Suggest that public schools use an improved Ellington field. City should improve Ellington for these schools.

DC has more important things to spend its money on, like for more no-bid consulting contracts for political friends of the mayor (who run their “businesses” from their bedrooms in PG).

-There was no indication that cost-benefit analysis occurred by DPR
-There is nothing in existing contract that requires DC government to extend contract
-Witness for Hardy states that DPR should have rexamined contract and renegotiated concessions. No one know why DPR didn't do that, which is typically in DC contracting process.

Margot Talbot is testifying in next few months...

Hey, Cheh? You mean like the cost-be fit analysis that DPR conducted for the Hearst Park pool??!!

It is stunning how these Maret boosters lack any self awareness and just lie. And lie. And lie. This entitlement to an additional nine years...let’s see any documentation whatsoever that infers that or says that. The board member who boast that he was appointed by three different mayors. My take away from that is he’s reminding us how powerful he is and that he could pick up the phone and get what he wants. It’s not a good look, Maret. My take away from that is he’s reminding us how powerful he is and that he could pick up the phone and get what he wants. It’s not a good look, Maret. Was that “Shooter”? I feel like I’m watching an SNL skit.

And it’s clear that Maret orchestrated this parade of hand selected representatives. The young man who was just “one of two” New students excepted into the fifth grade? I guarantee he was given language to use in his testimony. The whole thing is gross. Trying so desperately to defend themselves. They go on and on about how they’ve been good stewards. I don’t think anyone’s questioning that. At all. The point is they swooped in and fixed Jelleff not as a public service but to serve themselves. And they got a fantastic deal for those 10 years. The point is it’s time to move on and it’s absurd that they would get to maintain the access they have for the next nine years

Oh snap, Silverman just showed up from another meeting. She's already issuing the slapdown:

"Maret solved Maret's problem in 2009. Jelleff is nicer than your home field behind the white building. You've been a good steward, but now Maret's interests do not align with the District's interests in 2020."

Silverman:

"This isn't a contract, it's an easement. You couldn't get a 20 year contract because that would trigger a Council review. You've structured an easement with a 10 year period and a potential 9 year renewal in order to evade Council oversight.

My issue here is with the government and how they are handling this. We will get to that when DPR testifies."

When are they testifying?
