WashU and Emory

Anonymous
Can someone comment on the social and academic vibe of Emory and WashU? HS counselor recommending both, but my daughter is not excited about either due to lack of school spirit, sports, community, etc. She hears the social life on both campuses is lackluster. She is a very strong academic kid but wants to have fun. She has visited both. Didnt think kids looked happy or social. She thought washu campus was beautiful but not thrilled about st. Louis. She thought emory campus was odd layout, no sense of community, not much nearby. Any thoughts or insights into the student social and academic experience would be appreciated.

Princeton Review just ranked Emory #1 for best quality of life.

You should Google the article and see what it say. I think Wash U was also in top 25.

My kid has the same impression of both.

Kids from our school who go arent generally social. And the social ones want to transfer

How about Tulane instead?

A college bordering washU on the south was closed recently and it was acquired by WashU. WashU is reportedly going to build a new stadium on the site. I think it will boost school spirit in some way. Even without a new stadium WashU is a dream school.

She seems determined to not like either campus. Best to let it go and stop trying to convince her. Sounds like she's looking for more of a Bama or Tulane type experience.

OP here: she wants a school that has academically driven kids, but a strong social vibe as well. She loves duke which and Also likes vanderbilt. Both are academic but with sports and spirit. Both are very hard to get into. Doesn't want a school with just a party reputation...

That’s a good list…though purely based on sports enthusiasm and social scene o would move Northwestern below BC.

Let’s just be honest…she wants the best ranked schools that also have Power 4 sports. That’s it. Stanford also would go on the list, but that’s no cakewalk.

This list isn’t hard to generate. Add Michigan, UCLA, UCB, and UVA if publics are an option.

U Miami and Tulane are additional Power 4 privates to consider.

Florida, Oklahoma, and Alabama might be good options. They are underrated academically and can offer really good students $$. They also have a lot more going on socially than fellow SEC school Vandy.

In addition to PP’s list of Vandy, Duke et al

Someone really needs to be sure kids get that Vanderbilt football and the corresponding social life around it are nothing like the rest of the SEC.

If they want that type of scene, Texas and Michigan are probably the best bets that are also great academically.

I think WashU qualifies as a fairly social school among the elite universities. I don't think it's a sports school, and it's not exactly a party school, but the kids there have lives outside the library and the school has a high student satisfaction rate.

I don't know much about Emory, although I'm sure it's a fine school.
