I shouldn't have "been cheap" and gone to Jiffy Lube, even though she's taken her car there many times.
Our regular mechanic insists on keeping the car for days for any type of service, including a simple oil change, and I didn't want to be without the car for days. Oil changes are what Jiffy Lube does, so one would think they would know how to do it right... The car is possibly out of commission for a couple of weeks while they figure out the extent of the damage, and DW and I disagree about how to proceed (that's a bit of an understatement). Someone give me some hope. |
| They need to compensate you for a loaner car or something. |
| How can your wife blame you? I would expect Jiffy Lube to do what they charge you for doing. Not your fault. |
| Did she expect you to go back there and watch them pour the oil in?? She’s frustrated and taking it out on you. It’s a crappy situation, hugely inconvenient and probably expensive. Just apologize even though you didn’t do anything wrong and promise to never take the car there again. |
|
Does she really blame you, or is she complaining/venting about the situation and you're the only one around to hear? Obviously this is not your fault.
DH spends a decent amount of time ranting in my presence about things that have nothing to do with me, but it's just his way of venting. It's not like I'm to blame for whatever bee is in his bonnet. |

I had a coworker in DC in 1991 get a whole new engine for a Civic Del Sol from Jiffy Lube. They didn't reinstall the oil plug correctly and all the new oil ran out within 30 minutes.
|
| My friend’s car was irreparably damaged after something similar happened at one of those oil change places. |
| Hope you contacted the oil shop you had do the work. I have heard similar tales but have used those single service places (Jiffy Lube, Meineke, tire king) and not had a problem. Sounds like Wife is lashing out. How to proceed though is to ask lube shop to handle repair costs. |
This happened to me decades ago. Not sure I even made it two miles. OP, in my case they offered to compensate me by replacing with a used engine. I refused and threatened them with small claims court unless they gave me a new one. They eventually agreed. Good luck. |
I don’t understand. Jiffy Lube didn’t do what it charged you for? If you can prove that get a good lawyer and sue them for a new transmission |
| Right. She’s not responding to the mistake. She’s responding to your likely underreaction and absence of a plan. The shop likely destroyed your engine. Match your wife’s concern because it’s warranted. Then make a plan and follow through so you’re made whole. That’s all you need to do. |
+1 Don’t make this another problem she has to solve. |
A grown adult should be able to vent in a manner that leaves zero thought in the others persons mind that the grown adult is not blaming the other person. My wife is one of those people that vents in a manner that completely implicates me in everything or ties what she is venting about to something I have done or should have done. It’s exhausting and frankly ridiculous. |
| Do you have an insanely old car? Wouldn’t most cars still have the oil light on if they hadn’t changed the oil properly? |
| Every 5 years or so the local news sends investigators to these shops and always end up with plenty of film showing employees pretending to change the oil (doing nothing) or making a major mistake. |
