If you can’t get out of the house to run early what do you do?
I am solo parenting and can’t leave kids at home by themselves to get outside by 5-6am. So I need to wait until they are at camp/daycare and then run. So I can’t go until lunch time (need to work) and it’s already 95 degrees out. Do you just go and do it? Or just not run? Yesterday I went at 12:30 and it was ridiculous. Only did 2 miles and still had a headache from all the sweating. |
If you can't get out early, then you go late and find the shady side. Or you do a treadmill/gym. Or cross train at home.
Only insane people run mid-day in summer. For most of us, it's not worth getting sick and dehydrated. |
Agree that if you just want to get some exercise, you can do some calisthenics at home. But if you really want to run, most people can adjust by just doing it slower, mixing in some walking, and wearing a hat. |
I have the same issue when DH travels. I find shadiest route I can, bring water, and do peloton walk/runs |
OP - thanks yea its pretty much impossible for me to run when the kids are home, which obviously is the morning and evenings. DH works long hours and/or is traveling so I am home by myself. Kids are still young enough I cannot really leave them home even for a 30 minute run.
I just ran right now and good lord it feels like I am running in an oven. Went slow and had to walk twice. I am training so need to keep up runs and don't have a treadmill. |
Get a treadmill, join a gym, do something else in the basement or coldest room of your house. The sun doesn't rise until 6:10am so a run at 5am is not really an option anyways. |
I'd go right after dropping them off for camp. Noon is an insane time to run now. Capital Crescent trail is nicely shaded from Mass Ave heading south. If that's near you, run there. The shade makes a huge difference. |
I'm a heat intolerant runner. If I can't go early early or late late in the summer, it's either treadmill or swimming for me. And if I can't get to a treadmill or a pool, and I just need to move my body for a bit, then I'll do indoor bodyweight exercises. In my view, 45 minutes of things like glute bridges, lunges, squats, dead bugs, planks, clamshells, and stretches afterward does more for me as a runner than trying to knock out a few exhausting miles in insane heat.
Can't wait until those brisk fall runs...almost here! |
Heat intolerant runner again. OP, you mention you are in training. In my view, it's fine to skip a training run if the only time you can run is afternoon and it's too hot. If you stick to your overall program, you should be fine missing a few runs because of the heat. |
Indoor track |
Bring frozen water bottles and splash icy water on yourself every 3 minutes. |
On days like today I don’t run. It’s already too muggy at 6:30. I either ride the peloton or do body weight exercises (which actually help running a ton), or both. |
I run as early as possible, which I know you can’t do. But I also belong to a super cheap gym (PF) and use their treadmills when I absolutely can’t run outside. It’s $10/month, so even if I mostly exercise outside, the gym is worth it. |
Do you have any rec centers near you? Wheaton rec center has an indoor track where people walk and run. It is free to join for county residents. Maybe there is something like that near you? |
I have been running right after the kids are dropped off at camp. I usually end up starting around 9:30. It is still hot and unpleasant at that time, but not life-threatening. Can you start before noon?
If not, indoor tracks and/or a cheap gym for the treadmill only are your best options. Solidarity OP. I have been that crazy person you have seen running in the rain because I only had that one hour window as an option. |
