Well this weight loss is depressing as hell

As of this morning, I am 215lbs, down from 255. Which is great. 40 pounds is a lot, I know that. But, I am still wearing the same size clothes. 2X. I tried on a bunch of XXL and nope - while I can get them on, they hug all the fat rolls. So I lost 40 pounds and am still the same size. The only slight difference is when I put on my t-shirts, I don't have to sit with my knees up to my chest under the shirt to stretch it out. Obviously people have been taught not to comment on weight but nobody's made any comments about me looking healthy or good or any other euphemisms for having lost weight.

So I lost 40 lbs and nothing's changed, except now if I eat too much I feel sick. (Which I know is good - my stomach shrank or whatever.) I just wish I could see a real difference - my doctor had said if I lost 10% of my body weight I'd be able to lower the dose of my thyroid medication but when blood work was done she kept it the same. So not even that changed.

If the next size down hugs all your rolls, then 40 lbs ago the size you're still in was hugging all your rolls. Still improving.

In my experience you lose inches or pounds, one at a time, not both together. Especially if you're working out, not just dieting. So keep going and the next "what's going on here" milestone will be being down 2 pants sizes but the scale hasn't moved. Still improving.

Amazing job, OP! Congrats!

Have you tried taking measurements? Maybe start with some around the waist, the hip/butt, the arm, and the thigh. Since you've lost 40 pounds already, I'm sure you'll be able to lose more and then you'll be able to track changes in body circumference, even if you can't visually.

Another thing you might want to do is start exercising, specifically weight training. This will help you retain/gain muscle mass, which is what really makes people look good. I've gained 2 lbs in the past year, but my stomach actually looks better because, after doing some sit ups every single day, now you can see some muscle definition and before it was just flab.

You are doing great. 215 is still pretty big. I'm sure you do look a lot better. But the next 40 pounds is going to be an astronomical change.

I know it doesn’t feel like it, but you are doing great. I always tell myself that I can’t get to my goal without going through this current phase.

Even though your dr didn't reduce your thyroid medicine this time, maybe she will next time.

Chin up, and keep up the good work!

You are doing great! Agree with the other posters that you need to start other ways of keeping track of the changes - use the tape measure, photos, scans if you are feeling up for it.

OP here. I don't have a tape measure though I've thought about getting one. I walk 8-10K a day generally, and do weights three times a week since last fall. The shape of my arms have changed and I notice when I lift heavy things arm muscles are engaged rather than back muscles. Funny you mention sit-ups - I was actually thinking of doing some sort of stomach stuff on my non-arm days.

I've been so focused on trying to get out of plus size clothes (it was a huge wakeup call when I was about to have to go up a size to 3X/22-24) and to under 200 that it's hard to imagine even being 175.

If you were edging on a 3x, it sounds like your clothes didn’t fit and you have gone down a size.

I feel you but surprised your size hasn't changed. I weighed 270 at my highest and currently at 225. I am definitely down in sizes. Actually bought some 14/16 shorts the other day. Down from size 22

Have you tried 1x. XXL and 2x are not the same.

It technically goes L, XL, XXL, 1x, 2x, etc.

My sister lost 45 lbs to go from 320 to 275. I couldn't tell at all. Her face looked a bit slimmer but as far as her body, I didn't notice it. I DID notice her change in attitude, energy & stamina. We went on our annual NYC trip over the holidays and she was able to keep up with us without lots of breaks. And at that point, she was probably only 30ish pounds down.

She's now down to 240 and when I last saw her at Easter, I was finally able to notice the difference in her size. Don't be too discouraged! 40 pounds down is a huge accomplishment!

My friend recently lost 40 pounds, and she mentioned that no one has commented on it. I think these days people are too scared to bring it up! You may need to be the first one to bring it up.

It is the way you are built, too, and how clothes are cut.

I weigh about what you weigh now, and my clothes are either XL or 1X. I am 5 foot 9.

Congrats on the weight loss! I empathize with how hard it is!

Do you have some good spanx or tight undergarments? I found wearing those helped me feel the weight loss more when I couldn't see it. I could fit into smaller sizes and it made it more real.

People only commented on weight loss after I loss 65 and kept it off for a year.
