Real talk: are there going to be enough teachers for summer school?

Anonymous
Teachers want more info about content, expectations, module/lesson planning support/time. MCPS just didn't try hard enough to sell this to teachers with the info we need. The money got our attention, but the complete lack of any info and promises put off a lot of staff.

Or I’d be more inclined to do it if I didn’t already have TEN required summer trainings.... nope.

To the teacher(s) who keep saying ‘we are not a monolith’.
I don’t want to discourage you from using big words. I’m really proud.
But… we ARE. We are literally a part of a collective bargaining unit. We move and act as one.

So teachers- the monolith overplayed their hands. And we’ll have an awful year on our hands.

Next year will be better than this year. Enough with the drama. If you go into it expecting to the awful than it will be, for you. Things are opening up and resuming more normalcy. I’m looking forward to being off Zoom and directly teaching again.

Stop posing as a teacher. You obviously are not.

You can’t even read. The person who posted that was a parent. Lol. You’re such an idiot.

Your posts reek of “im not like other girls!” We get it. You’re a teacher who thinks they are better than all the other teachers out there. It’s embarrassing and pathetic.. and you’re definitely not but whatever makes you feel better at the end of the day.

You’re a teacher and you think monolith is a big word? I feel bad for your students.

The only people I know why normally teach summer school are newer teachers. It doesn't make financial sense for older teachers since it pays less than they normally make plus many of them would have to pay for camps/babysitter, etc. This year, not even the new teachers at my school will teach summer school. They are exhausted and I wouldn't be surprised if many of them quit at the end of the year.

Even if PP was a teacher (I also doubt it), they should speak for themselves. Due to my health condition, returning in person was not an option. I am grateful for MCEA’s work on behalf of staff who were high risk. I won’t be back in the fall and I’m okay with that.

So... so you think teachers can’t have their own thoughts and ideas outside of the teachers union? Oh boy..... I highly doubt you’re a teacher but if you are... I really think you need to find a new profession.

Anonymous wrote:I didn’t think the pay is good enough for me. I was concerned that mostly struggling learners would sign up, and I didn’t want to be cheap daycare for parents. That happened last time I worked summer school and I was worried it would be worse this year. Also MCPS has not been telling staff any details at all. All of the agreements and accommodations expire on June 17th and I don’t feel like being a test case for the issues that crop up.

Isn't that the actual point of summer school is remediation for struggling students?!

Not on DCUM. On this site, summer school is for acceleration, socialization, and child care.

It's only from like 9:00 till 1:30 it's not exactly great child care.

Then you just hire a high school kid for the rest of the day. Saves you a half day of care.

"just"?

Look, you knew when planning to have children, summers off were a thing. You knew to plan for this accordingly. This isn’t anything new.

Or, the exact opposite.
I went back in January and STILL understand that I don’t get to say that ‘I’m not like everyone else’. I went back early and understand why people are mad at teachers. And no, - my single act of returning does not exempt me from the terrible actions of teachers this year. Nor can I distinguish myself from teachers as a whole. So yup- I’m pumped in with the zoom bandits and cry babies. It’s sucks.

Maybe you should quit as the ultimate act of protest.
