Real talk: are there going to be enough teachers for summer school?

At the recent BOE meeting Monifah did say that they are offering summer school positions to new hires this year.

That happened last time I worked summer school and I was worried it would be worse this year. Also MCPS has not been telling staff any details at all. All of the agreements and accommodations expire on June 17th and I don’t feel like being a test case for the issues that crop up.

Isn't that the actual point of summer school is remediation for struggling students?!

Not on DCUM. On this site, summer school is for acceleration, socialization, and child care.

It's only from like 9:00 till 1:30 it's not exactly great child care.

They can get a jump start on decorating their rooms and convincing students to work when there’s an exciting tractor mower outside the window.

JK, like there are new hires.

And like they will be teaching in the same school in the same room.

Then you just hire a high school kid for the rest of the day. Saves you a half day of care.

Can't blame them. Have a fantastic summer!

Some of the public school teachers also go to the private schools for summer school. They may pay more.

And it's only for July.

I wish the Montgomery county would do some kind of partnership with KAH or some of the other local places that do summer camps do that kids could do aftercare at camps and get to have fun summer camp experiences

Summer school is from 9:00 to 1:30 pm for some programs, but many programs will be running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

MCPS is sending all kinds of reminders to staff to alert them to the fact that they have open summer positions.

No one is willing to take it, especially for the additional $200/week stipend. The stipend should have been $400/ week as MCPS has an overabundance in federal CARES money.

Look, you knew when planning to have children, summers off were a thing. You knew to plan for this accordingly. This isn’t anything new.

Just putting it out there that MCPS teachers received an e-mail today that there are still positions open for summer school, and to get the $200/week bonus they have to apply today. Sounds like they are not getting the interest they wanted, even with the bonus offer.

My first thought when I saw that email! Another example of the BOE making promises to parents that they can’t keep.

Someone told me that they even emailed substitutes to try and get them to teach. Will they just tell parents that they don't have spaces for all of the kids who are enrolled?
Anonymous
I just heard they're offering Paras a $100 a week bonus. I"m still not biting!
