Discrimination against Asians

Anonymous wrote:People making this argument fail to understand that the problem that FCPS is trying to solve is not "too many Asians", it is "too few Black, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged students". You could have literally the same number of Asian students at TJ after this lottery process as before, and if the number of Black and Hispanic students improve significantly, there will be celebrations at FCPS.

People have a problem with how Asians approach this conversation because they're making it all about themselves, when it's not all about them. FCPS has been trying to solve this problem for generations, and they finally have a political climate in which to make a bold decision about the future of the school.

The fact that this process is likely to result in fewer Asians at TJ is not evidence of discrimination against Asians. Indeed, if they continue to apply in massive numbers with quality applicants in each region, they are likely to maintain something close to their proportions at TJ.

Oh stop. This is hypocrisy of the first degree. FCPS knows very well what needs to be done to solve the problem. The solution looks like this: improving elementary schools and pre-school reducation in low-performing areas with large Black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged communities. Increasing free and cheap STEM after school activities with wraparound support inside and outside the school. Supportive afterschool policies for low-income students. Free prep classes.

But you see, doing this is expensive, difficult and long-term. Results are not guaranteed. But enough with the bullshit that there was EVER a political climate that frowned on any of the above.

FCPS decided do something easy and easily noticed to pretend they are addressing equity. They are doing NOTHING to better prepare promising Black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students for succeeding at STEM and TJ. They are simply making it easier to enter. Success at TJ and STEM does not begin on the first day of high school. But of course, addressing the root of the problem is too hard for FCPS.

Y'all don't seem to get it that whites have been pulling away from TJ for years. Applications are down. When accepted white kids and white families choose to go elsewhere.

Because they don’t want their kid to be in classes with too many Asians. This is a win for them, they can now happily send Johnny and Susie to TJ because they will not have too bee around too many Asians any more.

(Now replace Asian with Black or Muslim and see how that sounds).

Uh no, white families, AA families and Hispanic families prefer schools that are more rounded and are not prep at all cost, cheat at cost pressure cookers. Posters keep saying white
people want to change TJ admissions. They really don't. White families like AA families and Hispanic families would rather their kids have an well rounded high school experience without the pressure cooker environment. Thus the decline in white, AA and Hispanic students. The high achiever white, AA and Hispanic students prefer to go elsewhere and not the TJ at all cost.

It's only a pressure cooker environment to those afraid of the pressure. TJ is not for everyone.

Get rid of it so we can have fewer people who talk like this. It’s a high school, not the damn Green Berets. How did we manage to attract so many clowns so full of themselves? They put their own kids on a pedestal and look down on everyone else.

What is your beef? Why can't you understand that Asians, who are discriminated against every day in this country, feel that this is unjust? There is a privileged class in this country -- and it is not even close -- that is trying to change the racial balance of the school because it is majority Asian. Why do you think Asians have their kids on a pedestal? Why do you call Asians clowns? Why do you demean the culture of hard work despite being against all sorts of odds?

When a black man says white men can't jump, do you have the same attitude? Stop being discriminatory to Asians. Asians have enough discrimination at every point of entry in society - colleges, jobs, senior management. White privilege is at its best when it is claimed that Asians think they are on a pedestal. Thinking that you have higher moral ground is also discrimination. Acknowledge that minorities are at a disadvantage. Do not do reverse-psychology on Asians.

+2. It's like some guy with two overweight, near-sighted TJ kids took "A Few Good Men" a bit too seriously.

Who talk like what?
If you're one of those parents who want a "well-rounded" and non-competitive pressure cooker school envt for your kids, why do you even care so much about what other families want for won their kids?
I'm sure you look down on parents and their kids who work hard to get into TJ and consider your choices superior, so why not just leave other families alone?

Spot on! They're all about the optics, and have no interest in making lasting change. They also realize that the changes they are making diminish the communities they're pretending to help, and don't care anyway.

I do look down on you. You are myopic and clearly don't care about those who are less fortunate but still deserving. If others had that attitude, you would never have been allowed to set foot in this country. When it's time to pay it forward, you just circle the wagons.

So this social engineering of minorities is coming from people like you. If you are a true American you would not be saying this. Open your eyes and see how you think yourself as superior to others.

This whole thread and pretty much every recent thread in this AAP forum are disgusting, racist, xenophobia condoning threads.

There is concerted, systemic, legal discrimination against Asians. PERIOD.

You either get that because you are anti- racist or you don’t because you are not anti-racist. You approve of and condone racism against Asians. You think it’s not racism if you put minorities against one another and you are on one side, but you are. You think you are not racist by choosing one minorities possible benefits over another. But you are.

You are racist.

You think you’re not if you plant a BLM sign in your yard and repost ‘racial justice’ posts on FB. But you are.
You are still racist.

You think you can’t be racist because you are a minority. But you are a majority minority. You approve racism towards another less well represented and less politically powerful minority.
You are still racist.

And you are very comfortable in your racism.

It's rare for the most privileged to engage in ostentatious displays of self-pity on the scale we've witnessed here on DCUM.

You are not being discriminated against and your kids will be fine. If you had one ounce of sympathy for those who've been turned away from TJ for decades because they don't have the same advantages, you would see that, but you obviously have your head stuck far too up in your own ass to notice.

This is exactly what White privilege looks like. Look at the stats. Whites are many miles ahead of all minorities, yet they say Asians are privileged.

Well said. You have to work your ass off to get into TJ. You don’t need “privilege” to work your ass off.
