I think he married her because a) she is a nice person and b) she looked after him and made him feel like she was a safe person to start a family with. And he would have been correct there. I do think intellectually she is not his caliber and he may well have bored of that, gone out drinking, gambling, sleeping around and all that nonsense that caught up with him. But its not HER FAULT he did that, its his.
