Where do these kind of kids end up? We don't have super high goals - just want to make sure he ends up somewhere he is happy. He wants somewhere will school spirit and a fun campus life. Counselor says Wisconsin, Vermont, UNC but those seem like reaches based on this board. HELP!

UVA, William and Mary,

I don't think so. B students are not going to either school (unless the top 3 Naviance says otherwise). The bottom 25th percentile of entering students at both UVA and W&M is around a 4.04 . . .and that's the bottom 25th median. Schev reports students at 4.43 for the 75th percentile for W&M and 4.47 for UVA. (UVA stats are slightly higher than W&M, meaning slightly more difficult to get in)

Once again, the grading school at top privates is completely different, and the colleges know it.

Sorry--grading system

You clearly are a public school parent. It is not even possible to get above a 4.0 at the big 3, because there is no weighting of grades. These kids are still getting into UVA and W&M with Bs.

Parent of a "big 3" kid who got into Michigan. Sorry, straight 3.0 "B" students at Big3's don't get into Michigan without other hooks. 3.3, 3.5? Sure, but that isn't a "B" student.

No, I'm not. And that's why I said "unless top 3 Naviance says otherwise". I am aware that 4.0 is the top at some DC and Nova (Potomac) privates . . . a mistake in my mind because it pits the 3.95 kid against someone with a weighted 4.5, but not my choice.

Ditto for UVA and W&M.

The issue is where this particular student falls in his class profile. Maybe it is a year where he is in the 25th%. Maybe it is a year when he is in the 50th%. He will be compared to his peers. It is a bit of a crap shoot year to year for admissions.

A lot, but by all means not all, GDS students are accepted at an Ivy/Stanford/Chicago/Michigan/Amherst.

But a solid B student at GDS would need a hook to enhance chances.

LOL, no.

I have a lot of friends whose kids went to GDS and are there now. None of the recent graduates are at the caliber of schools you list. Great kids at wonderful schools, but really, no.

+1. Also soft skills and social network. Sidwell kids, for example, aren't hanging with middle class public schoolers in college. But of course all of this is over the head of hoi polloi who think their kid is the EXACT same as everyone they go to a certain college with. Campuses are stratified as hell. The playing field is never level.

Where do you see campuses that are stratified as hell?

Do you not understand the discussion? The weaker Sidwell kid got into your DD's school.
