Try to have some sense of reason and insight rather than spout off about something you are just speculating about.

Are these players one-offs? Any place the club lists the alums?

Many of the Alexandria players are claimed as other Clubs' 'own' when they leave at HS/teen age. Quite a few ended up at DC United Academy too. It's the classic develop players and other Clubs get them and claim them as their own. The question is how many of those big clubs players started and developed at the home club throughout their childhood. The answer is: very few. Check out DA rosters in the later years.

Curious, is that an accident of geography? Whenever it’s discussed about where to send your kid, everyone seems to say go to the closest club when the kids are young. At what age does one get the development that pushes the kid to the next level?

Are you asking whether it is an accident that most DA players come from other clubs? It is a function of how few DAs there are vs. how broadly they draw for talent. DC United necessarily draws all of its players from other clubs - there are no teams outside DA there. Even Arlington draws most of its boys DA players from outside Arlington. If you want a sense of how well clubs develop players, you should look at the teams play. Not even rankings necessarily tell you much about actual development. And clubs, of course, are really only part of the story when it comes to elite player development. A lot of that is simply a function of natural talent, athleticism, and commitment all channeled through a tremendous amount of work at home and outside the club as well. From a raw geographic perspective, you can go to the DCU website and take a look at where the kids live. They're all over the place (and Woodbridge tends to be the source of a lot of elite boys players).

Yes, for boys at DCU and VDA. Not anything like a majority but a surprising number over time.

I agree with the idea that clubs are only part of the equation. (I seem to recall some article about pulisic where his youth coach basically said it was all him and his parents.) What seems to be missing is where to be for developing during the teenage years. We often talk about how most of the top clubs in the area poach and recruit v. develop, but that seems incorrect. I could see that argument for the 18s and 19s but it seems a like a stretch to make that claim for 13-17. So what club/league is producing talent between 13-17 - whether or not the players are poached later? It seems like that is where critical development is happening - with the 12 and unders having access to enough quality in their backyards.
