In the seventies and eighties all we saw on television and print were blonde, blue-eyed, small-breasted, mildly athletic (in a tennis-playing sort of way) women: Farrah Fawcett, Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley. Beauty is aspirational and now that there is some genetic diversity in media ( at least on Instagram), other girls see themselves reflected. Far easier for a curvy Latina, Middle-eastern Or Black girl to experiment with contour and approximate Kim Kardashian Or Beyoncé than become a thin blonde. We all know skinny blondes will never go out of style. White men just need to be high-earners to be attractive. |
I loved the 90's. No social media, no internet dating, no constant need to look good for selfies or videos on social media, no fakeness on social media. Everyone was real and met in real life and everyone didn't suffer from back or neck problems or were as fat as they are now due to social media. |
| Long term use of sunscreen, better hair treatments including color, more strong/fit bodies, more flattering clothes worn by older women and frankly much better haircuts on them (like the Golden Girls - they weren't so old to justify those haircuts!). I'd definitely say women look better now. |
Oh, my, God Becky, look at her butt. It's so big. She looks like one of those rap guys' girlfriends. Sir Mixalot would like a word. |
Only if she’s 5’3” |

There has always been altering of appearances (foot binding, etc) from the beginning of time in all cultures... but it is off the chain now with blow up lips, boobs and bums. Really disfigured.
Other than that, I think women have more access to STAY beautiful as they age so I guess more attractive now- as long as it looks natural. |
Are you talking about 1890? |

The obesity epidemic has certainly taken its toll. In the 90’s when I was in college it was rare to see a fat person. It felt like there was a much larger population that was dateable.
However, it seems like exercise and nutrition science have come along way and the knowledge is way more accessible to anyone who wants it. This seems to have made the fit much fitter. I love that strong and healthy have become the new sexy instead of just “skinny”. |
| I didn't read all 9 pages so maybe the answer is in there but I'm not sure how you would even honestly evaluate this question. Are you looking at pictures of women now vs many years ago? I think the dramatic difference in photo quality now vs. then is going to make women now look more attractive. Are you doing this from memory? 20 years ago when I was a teen I was interested in other teens, not people my current age who are old people. Now, of course, people my age are more attractive to me so there's really not an accurate comparison even if we give an extremely generous allowance that my memory accurately reflects what people looked like back then. |

Really, this goes for men and women. |
well, this board/forum is dominated by women so you need to ask yourself, why are women doing this to themselves? there is no chance this thread was initiated by a man. |
I’m a female and agree. |

Yep.
I was a teenager in the 80s, and middle aged people now look so much younger than they did then. Many fewer people smoke and over tan than they did then. |
