thx, I read the RFP file (last one listed) and am familiar with legal docs.
no mention of science or social studies in either ELA or math requirements or preferences. Guess MCPS will whip that up?
mentioned 45-60 minutes of daily ELA and of daily Math so that frees up 60 minutes versus current C2.0. Wonder what MCSP will do with that time? More gym, A day for science, B day for social studies?
no mention of physical textbooks or work books, just digital stuff for teachers, parents, students.

Yeah. I wonder if that’s an attempt to stack the decks for Discovery Education which has a lot of online content, as opposed to a Singapore math type curriculum which is traditional materials. Also, there’s a section there where the curriculum provided has to describe how their curriculum matches up to MCPS’s framework that seems tailor made for an ex-McPS employee to write

This is Discovery's team, which hasn't been updated with ELA.
https://www.discoveryeducation.com/who-we-are/meet-the-curriculum-team/

Remember, however, that they did snatch Jim Fliakas, who was the ELA supervisor for MCPS. So they have their bases covered.

not sure if they'd work with MCPS again after what happened - or if they'd move on to another larger system

But they do have all the core contents covered.

They'd be smart to focus on the arts next.

Huh? MCPS is the 8th largest system in the country. There aren't many larger systems and most of them have selected their curricula.

oh no, novice

How long do you think systems - under our "newest" accountability mandates - actually stick to a curriculum framework?

I recently left MCPS for a smaller system. In my 20+ years, I've seen . . .
- complete autonomy (minus any standards) to
- Core Learning Goals (CLGs - anyone remember those?) with partially standardized guides to
- CCSS and standardized guides.

Courses, particularly in science, changed all the time to reflect the latest benchmarks.

There's ALWAYS a larger system making changes. MCPS is NOT the end all in terms of educational companies profiting off children. There are plenty of other larger systems that highlight the achievement gap.

NP. You sound like the novice re government contracts. Let's assume you are right and that means other districts change curriculum every 4-5 years on average. That means there is probably 1, maybe two, other districts this year. Landing MCPS, the second or third largest contract available this year, would be a huge coup for MCPS.

Even if all other seven larger districts were looking for curriculum now, landing MCPS would still be a huge deal since it is still a huge contract. That there may be a handful of larger companies is utterly irrelevant since company X would be happy to serve all the districts- it is not a situation where they have to pick and choose and would select the larger.

sorry, genius

I WORK with RFPs all the time in my job. In my content department, we recently landed a deal with a large educational company, and b/c the resource is so popular, we're thinking of expanding its use.

RFPs are content-specific. We know that. We saw Discovery offer bids in the areas of ELA and math. That opens the field for larger institutions to seek out materials for specific content-related areas. Also keep in mind that the cheapest bid isn't always the winner.

So a large content area in System X would indeed be a big deal for Discovery.

Just bumping this up to remind MCPS parents to fill out the survey sent in the August 28th email from MCPS about the curriculum update. It gives you an opportunity to make your voice heard about your curriculum preferences, questions about the process (and any concerns you may have that relate to conflicts of interest of vendors related to the cancelling of the last process)

2 more weeks til it's due. Please share this with any good curriculum providers!

Bite your tongue. Or at least write Jack Smith and tell him that will look shady as **ck.

I was being facetious. I hope they're not a contender. The county needs to invest in a proven curriculum.

+1 We should all send fruit baskets on behalf of proven curriculum providers to Central Office. They seem to respond to incentives.

Thank you PP. I completed the form and advocated for more recess/physical education time. I also asked for STEM to be a specials class. Finally, I noted that the curriculum needs to include resources for those students who are already 1-2 grade levels ahead of the grade they are currently in.

Are they actually going to answer some of the questions people ask? They never released the results from that parent survey they did in April as input into the RFP...

Why is it weird? They re-issued the RFP on August 20, now they've sent out an e-mail, and presumably at some point they will update the website.

The website is updated now, but I had thought they would update it along with issuing the RFP. I guess they issue it elsewhere.

Well, the email from MCPS did say to check the websites for the latest updates. If they issued the RFP on August 20 and didn't update the website til a few days later, that's not consistent with what they promised.

Sometimes I get the feeling that if MCPS were a pizzeria, and DCUM ordered a pizza with olives, there would be at least 5 threads per month about how MCPS is the worst pizzeria in the world because the olives ought to be oil-cured but instead were Kalamata. DCUM would also complain that:

1. a large pizza ought to be 16 inches instead of 14.
2. a large pizza ought to be 14 inches instead of 16.
3. the diameter of the pizza ought to be measured in centimeters instead of inches.
4. a large pizza shouldn't be one-size-fits-all; there should be different sizes of large pizzas for different people with different needs.

Also, of course, pizzas from the east county are gang pizzas, and downcounty people should be able to get the pizzas they're entitled to even when the roads in the upcounty are icy.

Brilliant!

I thought it was stupid. There's nothing wrong with parents wanting to be informed about a curriculum selection process that was delayed because of MCPS staff ethics violations.

+1 I don't know why they ask parents to do these surveys if they're not going to analyze or release the results.

The only surveys they take seriously are those taken by students.

bc then they can place blame on teachers if the surveys are negative
