NP here. This will surely generate attacks but other than the basketball thing, as one who hires at our firm I honestly can never see what it is with Duke. After all what is really known to have that is really unique? Don’t get this poster wrong the students are well prepared but there isn’t one particular degree that’s its known for (undergrad only am I referring as graduate is a whole different story).

Why do so many kids from New Jersey go to Duke?

I am a Duke alum and this is my first post on this thread. I went to Duke because it gave me the most non-loan financial aid and the weather seemed better than schools in the northeast.

Duke seems to attract a lot of people's ire and I don't know why. It is a good school and many of my friends went on to get degrees at prestigious grad schools and great careers.

It's not all white; when I was there it was at least 40% minority. The reason people keep calling it a "white" school is that the university is constantly addressing the antics of over-privileged, spoiled rich white kids while minority students and middle class kids are there to get an education and move on with their lives and maybe make a few good friends on the way. The lacrosse disaster, fraternities, the horrible town-gown relations get all the attention while all the normal students are just living their lives, enjoying a pleasant college experience.

Probably because many people think of Asians as white. Duke is 29% Asian according to their latest demographic breakdown on their school website. I’m not saying that’s my viewpoint, it’s just a common misconception that minorities mean a skin color other than white looking. So of the 49% minority, minus 29% of total population being Asian, that’s 20% for the aggregate of all the other minorities. So the average person looks at the student section of Duke and think it’s 80% white.

If someone wants to know what's so great about Duke, well, as you know Duke has a lovely campus, excellent academics and departments and resources and a high performing student body. That's all that really matters. It's not different from other comparable elite colleges. I don't think, nor do most people, higher or lesser of a Duke experience or degree and put it on par with all the other elite universities outside HYPS (who are in a different bracket, I don't think any disputes this). Penn versus Duke? Go to the one you like the most. There is no advantage to going to one over the other beyond subjective opinions or desires for weather or campus settings. Same with Duke versus Dartmouth or Brown or Chicago or Columbia. And same for those schools against each other.

There is no huge difference between Duke and Columbia or Penn or Broen or Dartmouth for undergrad, but Duke has a considerably lower yield ( including RD) than all of them.
