| Why do so many smart rich preppy kids, from California to New Jersey to Florida, want to go to Duke? |
|
Duke is the rich preppy private school of the south.
There is no other rich preppy private school of the south. |
| If you want to hear what's so great about Duke, you'll unexpectedly hear about it from a Duke grad at some point in time. I don't even care about Duke, but know way more about a random Dukie's college experience than people in my own family. |
Vanderbilt, Emory, Tulane, Washington & Lee... Maybe you meant there's no other rich, preppy private school in the south so popular with those from other parts of the country. |
Success begets success, so a top-ranked school attracts kids because of the ranking. Apart from that, Duke has a nice campus (it's what you get when a tobacco/utility baron decides to copy Princeton), a distinguished faculty, comparatively warm weather, and Coach K. I applied there, visited, and ultimately turned it down for another school. The negatives were the campus was too spread out, the frats were seriously obnoxious, and it seemed to be trying a bit too hard to overcompensate for not being an Ivy. |
Also, the law/business/medicine schools there have a strong pull for undergraduates with a pre-professional bent. |
| Expensive and overrated, but not the only school in the USA like that. |
Really? I don't think "south" has anything to do with the draw. California, New Jersey, Mainline Philly, north shore Chicago rich kids aren't drawn to Duke because of any southern vibe. |
Way to sneak Tulane in there. |
I meant universities not liberal arts colleges. Yes kids like warm weather and a duke is the only private option on the east coast in the south for real universities. Not liberal arts colleges... universities. Tulane and Emory are okay but they don't have sports. They are kinda lame. |

Deep in the heart of Dixie...
|
Uh Emory is #20 in the nation. |
You really think weather is a factor? It's 40 degrees in Durham right now. |
Kind of misleading statement. Most smart rich preppy kids from the coasts do not have Duke as their first or even second choice. Still it is true that Duke is on the college list of many of these kids, usually below a number of ivies, Stanford. |
OK. It’s 25 in Boston. |
