Apparently, in the "modern" world, every child who doesn't fit the mold needs a medical diagnosis. What the heck is wrong with you, PP? Do you honestly think that we in the US can't learn something from other cultures as imperfect as they are? You don't think we have a serious issue with guns and violence in this country where we could learn from other countries who have almost no school shootings? You don't think that we have an issue in this country with over prescribing drugs? I am not Indian, btw. |
I don't think most people think ADHD is not real, just that it's over diagnosed. |

Our DK just was diagnosed at nearly 16. Female teachers, but moreso the awful teaching methods employed these days, are a huge part of the problem for lots of kids. However our DK is in an amazing school environment set up in a way that accommodates all types of learners and guess what, DK still has trouble which led to the testing.
DK wants to use meds just to get through our educational system. DK is highly intelligent and quite possibly wouldn't want a vocational track. I do think we need more options for kids. College is not for everyone and we no longer have enough other options. But you judgmental folks need to get off your high horses. Lots of our kids have other health issues to deal with and you frankly should just be happy yours are fine. You have no idea what you are talking about. No one I know wants their kids to have to take stimulant medications to deal with school - are you crazy? We are the same as you - hoping our kids grow up healthy and find a profession they love. |
+1 PP is not well educated with average children is my guess. My 14 year-old DS with ADHD almost never (if ever) saw an electronic screen before the age of 2 and very very rarely after that. We have no iPads and there were no video games until he was 13. Nice try, though. Also, we didn't even try medication until high school, and now he only takes when he has big tests. And don't you all jump in and tell me that he doesn't really have it. He does. Quite severely. But medication doesn't sit well with him. Fortunately, he's exceptionally smart and can compensate enough to get decent grades. Otherwise, he just manages the best he can. Development and maturity has made a big difference. |

| Another PP here who DK. was just diagnosed at 15 with exceptionally high IQ. Also not exposed to electronics until age 13 and was 14 when bought gaming system, always very active. Has nothing to do with electronic use. |
Germany is also 20 years behind the times on treating autism, warehouses its kids with anything beyond very mild SN in separate schools, and decides who is worthy of being college-bound at age 10. There are plenty of problems with both countries. |
Americam here who worked in Germany for a year. Their kids are much better behaved, more mature, and dont shoot each other in school or on the streets. Its us who are the barbarians. |
You're basically both right. The average German kid is better behaved, but it's because they separate out and stigmatize those kids who might be anything more than slightly non-neurotypical. Also, they have sensible gun laws rather than the NRA nonsense we suffer through here. |
Dumb@ss, immaturity or being hyper is not the same as ADHD. And imaging actually reveals different types of ADHD as different developmental issues. This is not controversial. |
And ADHD is about development and when it happens. When a kids brain structure is completely different than their peers, it's not immaturity. Christ you're stupid. |
I put more faith into random internet diagnoses than real ones. Don't you? Jeez Louise! It sounds like as that boy matured he developed a greater capacity to handle his own strengths and weaknesses, which is a goal we all have for our kids, and which is commendable. |
? That's what pp said. He matured. As we mature, we learn to handle our weaknesses better. Studies have shown that about 30% or so of adhd is a misdiagnosis. Statistically, that means 1 out of every 3 poster on here who stated that their DC has adhd doesn't really have it. Either that, or DCUM hit the adhd jackpot. |
The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend imaging for adhd diagnosis. "More generally, the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn’t recommend any lab tests for ADHD – making specific reference to neuroimaging techniques, including SPECT, and qEEG. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is similarly skeptical: ADHD is “a clinical diagnosis,” and brain imaging and the like provide “insufficient data.” https://www.additudemag.com/brain-scans-for-adhd/ |
Wow I see why your kid was probably labeled ADHD. If they're as much of an immature impulsive firecracker jerk as you are, the poor kid never stood a chance. Grow up and calm down PP, you're a joke. |
