To you, what's the bottom of the "elite" colleges?

+2. Who is this person? I've been looking at this stuff for years now and I've seen Chicago and Columbia as the C, never CalTech. CalTech is a great school, but it's not liberal arts the way even MIT approaches for non-STEM majors. You can't lump it on with the liberal arts schools and claim it's absolutely better than many nationally-recognized liberal arts school.

HYPSM refers to the most prestigious schools in the country. Columbia and UChicago are not part of this group, they do not offer anything different from HYPSM, they are not better than HYPSM in any way. Caltech is niche and is better or as good as some of HYPSM in that specific niche area. That is why it is included. That is also why MIT is included. Columbia and Chicago have never been thought of on par with HYPSM.

just do a google search of HYPSMC and see what comes up:

CalTech doesn't bring anything MIT didn't already bring in spades. Your point? This is getting silly.

Caltech is as good as MIT for STEM and better than the other HYPSM schools. Columbia, or Chicago or any other top school is not as good or better than HYPSM at any field. At any field there is at least one or more HYPSM schools that are better. Also the prestige Caltech has in STEM, Columbia and Chicago do not have in any field. Yes it is getting silly if people are blind to facts. Also just click the links above or do a google search to see what HYPSMC stands for.

Columbia and UChicago don't have "prestige" in a single academic field? You're nuts. And ignorant of anything besides STEM.

Where is the lie?! Or maybe you cannot read... Columbia and Chicago do have prestige , but they do not occupy a comparable prestige level in any field as the prestige that Caltech occupies in STEM. Give me one major field where Columbia or Chicago are just as strong or stronger than all of HYPSM.

The CalTech poster wants to boost her school's rankings in the eyes of a bunch of suburban moms--as if that'll change reality--by tearing down two other great schools.

MIT is also great at Econ, Finance and some other fields. Which you can't say about CalTech at all. CalTech is definitely not in the same league as MIT.

CalTech, like Julliard and Curtis, are world class *institutes.* They are small and very nichy. To try to force them into comparisons with other world class *universities* almost degrades them.
Anonymous
OP-where did you go to school?

This is incredibly lame and you are troll.

Just off the top of my head, for UChicago the answers include English, Astrophysics, Evolutionary Biology, and Economics

Off the top of my head, for Columbia: finance (close to Wall Street), journalism (the best for both grad and undergrad), social sciences, sustainable development (they took Harvard profs), teaching, Fu for engineering and comp sci (beats HYP although not MIT), medicine/biology.

Also, PP's criterion if there not being "at least one" school that bests it would seem to harm CalTech, because MIT indisputably bests CalTech.

This is so ridiculous. CalTech stands on its own as a terrific, small STEM school. It almost seems diminished when people like PP think they have to tear down terrific comprehensive universities like Columbia and UChicago to somehow boost CalTech.

This is so adorable. But not in a million years, mainly because of size and scope. USNWR doesn't think so either.

This poster is so strange. We took a serious look at Caltech and the people were so engrossed in world changing science research I doubt they give rankings a thought. Although beautiful and world class it came off as more humble than boisterous. And they certainly compete with MIT with humour! I doubt they give any other school including HYPS much thought. The kids they seek are very specific.
Anonymous
To be honest, most folks draw the line of “elite” just under (or near) the school they are connected to. The best way to get an honest answer would be to look at one to one yield. In other words putting aside all other factors (legacy, finances, geographic proximity) given a choice between Stanford and Yale how many would choose Yale? Or as between CalTech and MIT how many would choose CalTech?

It’s impossible to get this data, but I believe that Stanford, Harvard and MIT would stand out.
Anonymous
CalTech arguably has the smartest students.
Anonymous
I agree that CalTech is highly respected by almost all HYPSM people.
Anonymous
HYPSM have the prestige because they have the most money.
