CalTech is a great school, but it's not liberal arts the way even MIT approaches for non-STEM majors. HYPSM refers to the most prestigious schools in the country. [b]Columbia and UChicago are not part of this group, they do not offer anything different from HYPSM, they are not better than HYPSM in any way.[/b] Caltech is niche and is better or as good as some of HYPSM in that specific niche area. That is why it is included. That is also why MIT is included. Columbia and Chicago have never been thought of on par with HYPSM.

Caltech is as good as MIT for STEM and better than the other HYPSM schools. Columbia, or Chicago or any other top school is not as good or better than HYPSM at any field. At any field there is at least one or more HYPSM schools that are better. Where is the lie?! Or maybe you cannot read... Columbia and Chicago do have prestige , but they do not occupy a comparable prestige level in any field as the prestige that Caltech occupies in STEM. Give me one major field where Columbia or Chicago are just as strong or stronger than all of HYPSM. [/quote]

Just off the top of my head, for UChicago the answers include English, Astrophysics, Evolutionary Biology, and Economics[/quote]

Off the top of my head, for Columbia: finance (close to Wall Street), journalism (the best for both grad and undergrad), social sciences, sustainable development (they took Harvard profs), teaching, Fu for engineering and comp sci (beats HYP although not MIT), medicine/biology.

Also, PP's criterion if there not being "at least one" school that bests it would seem to harm CalTech, because MIT indisputably bests CalTech.

This is so ridiculous. CalTech stands on its own as a terrific, small STEM school. It almost seems diminished when people like PP think they have to tear down terrific comprehensive universities like Columbia and UChicago to somehow boost CalTech.[/quote]
