You gotta hand it to Bowser and Henderson- rather than own up to any mistakes, they are doubling down and defending he preferential treatment. That takes some serious chutzpah!

The last paragraph of the article being all self righteous worth the teacher who requested the transfer for her kid so her kid could attend the school she was teaching at. Henderson sounds like a horrible human being.

I was one of those people who basically agreed with Henderson that if they didn't want her to use discretion they should not have crafted rules that permitted her to do so. And I stand by that position...but OMG! The self righteous email to the CHML teacher is beyond the pale. She is not qualified to sit on the board of Robin Hood or be involved in any school program or system. What a scumbag.

They gave her discretion because she is supposed to use it for the benefit of kids, like that kid whose mom wanted her with other children of deaf adults. Not so she could hand out favors to the 1%, who want BOTH their 6 bedroom house in Brentwood AND to be in-bounds for Murch.

Ding ding ding ding ding! Correct!! Well said

To be fair, I am pretty sure that Ross and Brent aren't the only schools that have students with deaf parents...

I feel like an idiot...can someone instruct me on how to print out a copy of this report. I can't figure it out. Thanks.

I actually am not sure whether you can print it. It may be that the Post disabled printing so it stays exclusive to their website? not sure but in any case, not a dumb question since it seems to be impossible to do

This is the poster from above. I can't say exactly how I did it, but I was able to print it and save it. Wish I could explain how I got to the print page but somehow I did. So it is possible

Second, let me just clear up some facts. I went through the lottery, as every parent interested in a DC Public School placement does. To my knowledge, my baby was not matched to any school.

As is the right of any District parent, I petitioned DCPS to secure a discretionary placement, and I am grateful that Chancellor Henderson was able to assist in securing a seat at a school that fit my child's unique needs.

Some of you are aware of some of the challenges Malik experienced in his previous school, and I am so grateful that DCPS has such wonderfully diverse options to meet the needs of students with different learning styles.

Now, back to the work of expanding opportunity for every single District resident in all 8 wards."

Huh.

Yes Courtney, we know it is a right of every parent -- it just stinks of cronyism that you got one.

And just like you we all love our babies and want schools that fit their unique needs but don't happen to be friends with the Chancellor.

Please, please get canned. What you have done is actually taken away an opportunity for another child by accepting that placement.

Does she not realize that it's the right of every parent to request a special placement, but that very very few parents are every granted this right?

Me again. Figured it out. At the bottom of the document screen, in the left corner there is a small square with four diagonal arrows. Click it. It launches a new screen showing that same page but also showing a right column with "Inspector General report on D.C. school lottery" as a title. Click the hyperlink titled Original Document (PDF). It opens the document in a screen that you can print and save.

If you look at the source code, all the text is there-- but not easy to read, of course.

Everyone loves their kids just as much as you love yours yet some of us are stuck in schools in which our kids are NOT a good fit. And we don't have the money to move. Nor do we have power and influence to jump ahead of others. You ahve both and decided to use one rather than the other. And none of us will forget it.

Fenty did it a second time because there wasn't enough uproar the first time. If there aren't consequences, nothing will change. And, no, bitching on this board is not a consequence (obviously - see Fenty). So all you community organizing types, who has some kind of action or formal petition for action in the works. Do we want these people fired, do we want a complete report for the last 5 years and all children of government officials who received a special placement removed from school (let the parents buy a friggin house IB if they want their kids in)?

I'm not that interested in tarring and feathering the individual parents- their names are out there and it's embarassing. I think they should be required to re-enter the lottery and not be permitted to re-enroll in the schools (I guess at this point it's too late for '17-'18 school year lottery).

Bowser needs to be held accountable. Not much you can do with Henderson- she's gone.

What do you mean it's too late for 17-18? Nope. It's not. Make identifying any special allowances made a priority and anyone that found needs to disenroll and enroll for their IB school.

Punish the kids for the actions of their parents?

I also agree that we shouldn't tar and feather the individual parents. I want the system to be changed - let there be a committee of three that decides the special exceptions with an ethics officer on it, let it be public record, and change the rules/guidelines so that who you are doesn't determine jumping the line but what the needs of the child are (like the deaf girl.)

Not getting something you were never entitled to, is not a punishment. They are welcome to join my DD EOTP. Or let's start charging their parents Maryland tuition.

+1 and no one is saying kick them out now. But having them complete a year of school and then leave is what millions of children do worldwide when families move, or children go from elementary to middle school. This gives their parents 3+ months to explain to their children they are starting at a new school, or three months to find a home inboundary for the school they want to attend. They can take their pick.
