We traveled to Paris with friends recently and they were disgusted by the crime and filth there. They said it was nothing like they expected and would never go back. On edge the entire time thanks to crowds and agressive pick pockets.

I never heard of anyone being disappointed by Paris.

Japanese people have a specific syndrome known as Paris Syndrome where they are so discombobulated by the difference between the reality of Paris and what they perceived it to be that they kind of lose it and have to be hospitalized. I'm not making it up, Google it!

I was a little bit. Maybe it had something to do with having a guy in a trench coat expose himself to me in the Metro. Creepy. Also, I had no idea the Mona Lisa was so small. I enjoyed Paris, but it was certainly not my favorite city by any stretch.

Just got back from Disney and I have no desire to go back. Spent a full day at Magic Kingdom where all I did was wait in long lines for 5 minute long rides and was hearded like cattle trying to get back to the parking lot. It's American commercialism at its worst. And watching people gorge themselves on crappy junk food all day and wear tacky Disney garb that they'll never wear when they get home is just depressing.

Paris. Most people were really rude to us - I suspect out of racism as my ex was Middle Eastern - and the food we had was, on the whole, mediocre.

To each their own.

Florida-hater here - I'm sure the state parks are nice. I was more talking about the areas where people live.

Just nothing to recommend it. Blah beach, drab houses.

I agree. What is the appeal?

Never understood it.

The contrast between the resorts and everything else was sad.

Not a major location, but I was so let down by Hershey Park, especially the "factory" tour.

I had a similar experience in St Lucia, we stayed at a small bed and breakfast with a terrific view of the Pitons during Jazzfest. The concert we saw and the waterfall & hot spring gardens and smaller hotels we visited near Soufriere were nice, as was the snorkeling at Anse Chastenet, but the unemployed men trying to sell absolute crap in downtown Soufriere and on the beaches were a hassle and there was a lot of trash in the streets, like they don't care enough about their beautiful home to keep it clean. It seemed like everywhere we went the women were working and the men were loitering. Apparently there is also a big drug/human trafficking problem there because of their location on the island chain. We met a local at the hotel restaurant who said there are nightclubs there you would not want to walk in to - he said "your wife might go in disappear and not in a good way."

Some of these experiences may be based on when you go...I loved Amsterdam (the weed! the Indonesian food! the Rembrandts! Van Gogh! bikes and canals! the botanical garden, the easy connections through the modern airport and train stations) and we just avoided the red light district. Drunken American college kids everywhere. I remember my first beer, sheesh you guys...
Rome was my favorite Italian city. Florence and Venice were OK especially the art and the countryside around Florence, but Rome just overwhelms you with history. I ate an orange from a tree in the Emperor's garden, saw the Sistine Chapel, all the Renaissance architecture and Roman ruins...the museums in Milan cannot compare.

Then you ate at the "wrong places."

You cant get good weed at home? I'm kind of shocked that that would be at the top of your list...

Loved Paris. There were no crowds at the end of July. Didn't see trash on the street or crime.
Didn't like Amsterdam. Every street looked the same and trash was everywhere. Must have had a party the night before or the trash collector were on strike.
Love Finland- the whole country.

Okay, I see your insult and raise you: Most of the US is a shit hole!

I'm a PP, and I agree. I'd rather be in shit-hole Europe than any US shit-hole. Jersey, I'm looking at you...

Have you ever ventured off of the turnpike?

Many times.

Who cares?

Don't go to Colorado

Not all of Italy, but Rome for sure. Went back in 2012 after 30 years and was disappointed by how hard it was to get a decent meal near the Pantheon, how hot, dirty and crowded it was, and how everyone spoke English. I could barely practice my Italian. Italy is still awesome, but you have to go off the beaten path.
