I've always wondered about this and am pretty sure I'd feel the same way. It would be so cool to see... for about 30 min. And then I'd be ready to leave.

Thailand.. The tourism prositution was so depressing. Way too touristy and very little felt authentic.

Yes! The first time I went I was 18 and had waited my whole life to see it. After about an hour, I thought, "This is what I've been waiting for??" So silly and commercial. We did take our kids on the requisite trip there, but only once. Never again.

Hawaii - all of it.

Florida - all of it.

We spent a week in Thailand and never saw one prostitute. Really depends on what scene you go for -- we were out in the country, not hanging out in Bangkok or Phuket

Who cares?

Thailand is very touristy but it's a big country. And one of my favorites.

Okay, I see your insult and raise you: Most of the US is a shit hole!

I'm a PP, and I agree. I'd rather be in shit-hole Europe than any US shit-hole. Jersey, I'm looking at you...

Have you ever ventured off of the turnpike?

Canary Islands in Spain sucked. I also did not care for Paris. Loved Hanoi, Sapa and Halong Bay in Vietnam. Loved Interlaken. Rio sucked and was scary. Santiago is a pleasant city. Port-au-Prince is the closest to hell I have seen. Montana kicks ass. Malaysia is boring and somewhat threatening. Japan is by far the strangest place I've been to (just an alien place). Iceland is really awesome. Loved Monterey CA. NYC and SF are overrated in my view. Cambodia was a pleasant surprise (Siem Reap).

I just came back from Paris. I think it's so beautiful, clean and safe. I just can't imagine someone not liking Paris!

Liked and would recommend enthusiastically to any travelers: Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, Morocco.

Liked and would recommend enthusiastically to intrepid travelers: Mali, Burkina Faso

Was fine with, but wouldn't necessarily recommend for travelers: Madagascar, Togo, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Lesotho

Please never make me go to there again: Guinea

I try to find something good about everywhere, but honestly, Florida is a giant armpit. We went to Disney, and while I liked being on the Disney properties just fine, everything that wasn't right at Disney was just depressing. I don't see how people live there.

I enjoy the state parks of Florida. I'll never go to Disney.

To each their own.

How many of those times were post-Katrina? It's not the same city, and never will be. That said, New Orleans has always had a history of kind of lawlessness and seediness, and that's part of the city's vibe. It's one of very few places I've been that scare me (hello, cemeteries that are historic and awesome and DANGEROUS), and I've been several times pre- and post-Katrina (including volunteering in the recovery effort) but I still love it. Just to visit though, I would never live there.

Did you eat there? Go out on Frenchman? See the Garden District? These are all better things to do than hit Mardi Gras parades and Bourbon Street and the Riverwalk. Not that those things don't have their time and place, IMO.

PP here -- twice before Katrina, once after. I did eat and do the Garden District, spent time in the French Quarter, was not there for Mardi Gras. I think you hit the nail on the head with seediness as part of the city's vibe maybe? I'm not really certain. I've just always not quite understood the hype.

I have traveled a lot. The only place that disappointed me was Gatlinburg, TN. I, as an agnostic jew, never felt as out of place as I did there.

As for the people that did not like Hawaii -- I can understand Honolulu....just a big overcrowded city with a lot of traffic but nice weather. But, lean Honolulu, and even Oahu is nice...Kauai is amazing...Maui away from the resorts is nice, and how can you not like ACTIVE VOLCANOS?
