Rolling Stone Article - Sexual Assault at UVA

It is very difficult for me to believe that the Rolling Stone magazine aware of this problem before UVA administrators. UVA president needs to resign!!

geez, that story was damn horrific. and disturbing and sad. all the denial was surely for preservation of the university endowment, no doubt. that is what it amounts to - power and money.

as a taxpayer, i want funds revoked from that sorry excuse of a pillar of higher education.

I saw a news story about a woman who was date raped as a student and UVA did nothing. Then maybe ten or fifteen years later her rapist couldn't live with the guilt and apologized to her. By then the statute of limitations had run out so nothing happened to him.

Check again - wasn't he convicted? Her picture outside the courthouse was in the RS article.

Anonymous wrote:This whole thing is sickening. It's not just UVA-although this is one of the worst-its frats all over the country. Clemson, Vermont, Hopkins, on and on. It's 2014. What purpose do social frats serve nowadays? And, what about college administrations? Are they afraid of the frats??

It's the alumni that administrations are afraid of, especially those with deep pockets that belong to these frats.

No statute of limitations on rape in Virginia.

I am really hoping Anonymous will out the rapist that set her up. He doesn't seem so hard to find. How many third years were there in that fraternity? Are there around 20 to 25 members of each class in a fraternity? How many were lifeguards their third year?

I checked Twitter to see what was trending on this topic.

When I searched #UVA just about the only posts are about UVA's footbal game today against the University of Miami.

Here are Twitter highlights:

#UVA trending topic: @ThoriumWealth The goose guy owns the internet tonight! #uva #gohoos https://t.co/0uDIZg925X

and then these gems:

#UVA #Rape

(The below tweet is in response to UVA shutting down greek parties. Also, the below Twitter account has several other tweets about parties starting back up in January, etc.)

@phispsiuva @Rambobiggs Baldy is just an old POS with a hearing aid. If these assholes are protecting us, we're shit-out-of-luck. Glock-up people.

#PhiPsi **Editors Note: There were a few pics of obviously very drunk, scantily clad girls that were tweeting their pics from #PhiPsi parties -- makes me worry for them,

@TolkaTim #anonymous let's find out if it's true that all #phipsi #fraternity brothers r required to participate in gang #rape. I wonder. #Hacktivist

#PhiPsi @UVA breaks the silence to invite me to a gangbang. How many times is it a gang #rape? @cavalierdaily #cville http://t.co/Qkb4r29NEW

@daverson #UVA just RAPED Mia!!! #FakeResponse Useless humans. Bomb it. Get it off the map.

Current President of UVAs Phi Kappa Psi chapter may know a lot about this. Maybe he should be questioned: www.linkedin.com/in/bradleysolomon

Thank you to victims of these horrible events and to RS for making us all listen. I was incredibly close to being a victim myself in a situation described so clearly in the article (freshman, spiked sweet punch, taken to a quiet space) but luckily, got out with the help of a friend. I never drank again.

In addition to rethinking the value of a social Greek system, I also think we need to better inform our women on how to protect themselves from sexual predators. This starts long before college with helping to develop a healthy self esteem and life long goals.

It continues with knowing that binge drinking leads to bad things and that certain situations in college just aren't safe anymore. For example, going to a frat party without a dedicated wing woman (who you never leave alone!), never venturing to a quiet space alone with a guy you don't really know, or even going on a "date" unless the gentleman in question has been fully vetted. Funny enough, these are all things you would do to protect yourself as an adult dating in the "real world."

Problem is, college leaves women particularly vulnerable because they are made to feel as if they are part of a larger but intimate community that will protect them. They are not. They are part of a community who will try to educate them but beyond that, they are on their own.

Finally, self defense lessons, pepper spray and rape alarms may just need to be the everyday artillery of our college women until frats are dismantled altogether.

The one downfall of the RS article is the fact that Jackie's rape was so atypical (no drinking involved) and so brutal. I hope it doesn't make women feel like their event is lesser, therefore it should not be reported. It should and with any luck, justice will prevail.

Looking into self defense lessons for my teen daughter right now.

Can't believe the twitter posts. Just gross.

I think with Longo on the case, they will be found, they will be tried, they will be found guilty and they will serve time. Some other websites are already outing possible suspects by posting links to people based on information given out in the Rolling Stone article.

would you feel comfortable sharing a link?

You are correct, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/17634482/ns/health-mental_health/t/man-sentenced-rape-committed/

Liz Securro wrote a book about her experience. After Beebe "apologized" to her, she discovered 2 other guys were also involved in the rape.

She wrote an eye opening book about her experiences. _Crash Into Me: A Survivor's Search for Justice_

http://www.amazon.com/Crash-Into-Me-Survivors-Justice/dp/1596915854

She reported her attack and went to the hospital, look how far it got her....

Holy shit. I hadn't previously heard about this case. How can UVA deny that this is a serious, serious institutional problem in Charlottesville? If
I had any ties with UVA I would be so disgusted right now.
