Any colleges you wouldn't allow your kid to go to?

Anywhere that doesn't give us enough aid to get into. I love my kids, but at the end of the day, I think a decent education with little to no loans at graduation is a better gift than a high price tag education.

Finished high school early so started college early. Not too hard to figure out.

I'm surprised that you didn't let him finish HS on time and go to a better school instead. Who cares if he's so smart that he finished 2-3 years early if he just goes to an average/crappy school in the end anyway.

Or don't. Ridicule it and make fun it with your kids while you all hang out and lament how nobody takes the time to volunteer.

Raising money for Komen doesn't win you any points in my book.

We have one who has graduated, three in college now, one in high school. My four oldest chose very different schools. I have three adult children all done with college and beyond.

We made it clear to them when they were in high school that we had the right to veto any school that we thought was not suitable for them. So with our help a short list of schools was drawn up in which they were heavily involved. They were fine with it.

Why did we do this? Easy, we were paying for their college and as long as it was on our dime we had a say - not that we would decide the school they would go to but we would decide which school they would NOT go to.

When it came to grad school, law school, med school, they made the decision partly because they were funding most of the cost and also because they were really mature enough to make a decision. You may think that 18 year olds can make informed decisions and some can - but many cannot and it is the role of the parents to guide them and if we are paying for it to have a decisive say on what is not acceptable.

BTW, none of my kids are or have been on medication or therapy.

PP's pretty sure that kids with LDs just need a swift kick in the ass from their parents to get better. Letting kids choose their college is just a symptom of lax parenting that leads to therapy and medication.

Not the PP, but you must be a miserable person that manages to find fault with everything. There's a lot of people with degrees from University of Maryland that are doing just fine. I have both my BS and MS from UMd and I'm a C-level executive in a large, multinational corporation, DH has undergrad from UMd and he's a CIO, BIL has engineering degree from UMd and he just got promoted to SVP at his company and SIL with a BA from UMd is SES. So, from our family's perspective a UMd degree has been far from crappy.

My own SLAC and any others that charge $65K a year. It's just not worth destroying our retirement, 529 funds,as PP said, or bankrupting our kids with hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans. Go VA universities all the way. $9500 a year.

Same here. If my kid wanted to go to one of those schools I'd before upset with myself - parenting fail. I also would have qualms about UNLV - I can't think of a good reason to go to college in Vegas, and I know for me it would have been catastrophic. Tulane is on the bubble, though it's a great school.

I didn't think privileged background. I would say someone with a chip on their shoulder because all they got from an Ivy league education was a crappy government lawyer job.
