DC Clubs circa 1987: Tracks on Thursdays, Cities on Fridays...

I did some serious damage to my hearing at Capital Ballroom. The sound system was crazy loud and I don't think they realized just how loud it was when they first opened.

crush?
club heaven and hell?
DECADES?
those weird pop up clubs in odd areas like near NY ave? forget names...
18th street lounge
the tune inn?
toledo lounge (still there)

And the best bar ever, in the world, KINGPIN (next door to the velvet lounge on u street / florida ave before it was even remotely safe or gentrified?)

Also I went to Republic Gardens all the time (white girl here)
And the lions den (reggae club on 18th street)

Ever time I was in kingpin, I wondered why they hadn't been shut down as a firetrap! Kept going back, though. . .

PP here - same! And then they did have a fire that shut them down! ... We were tight with the owners - Joel and Sharveen. Joel's still around DC I think, though I don't go out anymore. Sharveen moved to Cali and I lost track of him. Anyone still know him? There was a movie that was made about kingpin, which was really funny. Lots of the DC scenesters from that era featured. I have it somewhere, but forget the name of it.

I was talking to some friends recently about it and nobody can remember but we all remember it being there. Anyone have any clue?

I believe you are remembering Bojangles, part of Blackie Auger's then nightclub/restaurant empire, also including Lulu's across the street, Abbey Road, Samantha's, The Black Rooster and the more upscale Iron Horse Tavern--all within several blocks of each other. My husband opened Abbey Road and we each had separate efficiencies in an Auger-owned apartment building right around the corner! Disco was king and Rumors and the Plum were all part of that scene. Anyone remember the M Street roller disco parties sponsored by Rumors?

Odd's and the 21st Amendment, for the GWU crowd. Tiber Creek if you were feeling flush and wanted to get out a bit with a group looking to do some boots.

But go into Georgetown -- never!!

You doubt that anyone born after 1987 would be a mom yet?! People born in 1987 are now going on 38 years of age. I’m pretty sure many of them are parents.

Anonymous wrote:Ha! This thread brings back memories.... I went to Tracks, 5th Column, the old 9:30 and sure, I'll admit it, the Dome now and then (always pronounced, "do me"). Anyone remember a place called Jaxx (sp.?) in Springfield, like in a strip mall? It was a headbanger place. I never went (since I wasn't a grit), but always thought it was a funny concept and location. There was like a Vietnamese grocery store in the same strip mall. Totes reminded me of the kind of place that Wayne and Garth would hang out at.

I do remember Jaxx! Vaguely. In the 90’s. They had sort of B-list live music, it was pretty fun actually.
