okay how about mid-to-late 90's. crush? club heaven and hell? DECADES? those weird pop up clubs in odd areas like near NY ave? forget names... 18th street lounge the tune inn? toledo lounge (still there) And the best bar ever, in the world, KINGPIN (next door to the velvet lounge on u street / florida ave before it was even remotely safe or gentrified?) Also I went to Republic Gardens all the time (white girl here) And the lions den (reggae club on 18th street)
Ever time I was in kingpin, I wondered why they hadn't been shut down as a firetrap! Kept going back, though. . .
PP here - same! And then they did have a fire that shut them down! ... We were tight with the owners - Joel and Sharveen. Joel's still around DC I think, though I don't go out anymore. Sharveen moved to Cali and I lost track of him. Anyone still know him? There was a movie that was made about kingpin, which was really funny. Lots of the DC scenesters from that era featured. I have it somewhere, but forget the name of it.
