The other night "Foyle's War," a very good Brit TV show set after WWII was talking about the "Negro" soldiers who were still in England and I was surprised even though it was in the language context of the day.

WTF are you talking about? "Negro" is not a slur...just an outdated term. Using the word "Negro" is like "colored"...it just shows that you aren't current. I know lots of my very old black relatives that still use both words. They say that they shouldn't have to constantly change their terminology when referring to themselves. I kinda agree.

I don't believe I said "Negro" was a slur. I only said I was surprised when I heard it in a TV show set in, probably, 1946 because one never hears it any more. Like you said, it is not part of our vernacular.
Untwist your panties and proceed with your day.

"Lawyer: Have you ever used the N-word yourself?
Deen: Yes, of course."

Of course????? WTF? I am a white woman and have never, in the entirety of my life, ever used this word. Never. Not to friends, family, or even under my breath. How is the answer to that question "of course"? She is gross.

As other posters such as myself have said: did YOU grow up in the rural south in the 50s? If no, then it's not surprising you have not used that word. That was the norm back then there. I'm sure that's what the context of "of course" is referring to. Because she goes on to say now that she's older and it's no longer 1960s Georgia, she doesn't use it and doesn't condone it. But yes, white people in the rural south in that time period DID use it. You can understand that times were different then or you can get up on your moral high horse because you grew up in a different time/place and knew better than rural southerners did back then.

1860, 1960,2060 that is no excuse...it may be an explanation...but no excuse...

I didn't offer it as an excuse. I offered it as an explanation. It's very easy to view things through a 2013 lens and get high and mighty without considering that times used to be different and people are a product of their environment.

"old white southerner has used the N word" is not shocking news to me.

I believe that things are getting better. Not perfect. But I see marked changes in my generation, and that of my children. It would never dawn on my children to treat a person of color any differently from anyone else.

I hope they stay that way.

Ohhhh....I see...I guess we can say the same for Nazi's in the 30's and 40's
slave owners for 400 years...
welll they were a product of their environment??
Look -- I don't hate the lady and wish her no ill-will...
But folks need to understand that racism is not just about hating someone...
Words create attitude --- create--- behaviour --- creates pain, degredation....excuses for treating people as less than human...
And the next time someone calls your child a Nigger...or maybe a "flat-ass bitch" as the other pp was....I just want you to think...hey ...they are a product of their environment..they get a pass...

Understanding that people were raised to be ignorant doesn't give them a free pass to be so...
Hopefully, that person learns and grows...but doesn't mean they don't get called on their behavior.

Looks like Food Network fired her! good, she sucked even before this.

Good work, Food Network. It's nice to finally see a corporation make employees accountable for their abhorrent behavior, in a fairly swift manner.

OH LORD HERE COME THE RACISTS!

Look at them flood the Food Network page. It's sickening, but somehow, not that surprising.

haha, that's what I thought initially, but I was subsequently told (and not by a white person) that many black people think that white women have "flat-asses".

Sorry but that is a well know fact

I am white, and my ass is flat.
