Have not read every page but have to say this excerpt was all I needed to see of her transcript: "Lawyer: Have you ever used the N-word yourself? Deen: Yes, of course." Of course????? WTF? I am a white woman and have never, in the entirety of my life, ever used this word. Never. Not to friends, family, or even under my breath. How is the answer to that question "of course"? She is gross.
As other posters such as myself have said: did YOU grow up in the rural south in the 50s? If no, then it's not surprising you have not used that word. That was the norm back then there. I'm sure that's what the context of "of course" is referring to. Because she goes on to say now that she's older and it's no longer 1960s Georgia, she doesn't use it and doesn't condone it. But yes, white people in the rural south in that time period DID use it. You can understand that times were different then or you can get up on your moral high horse because you grew up in a different time/place and knew better than rural southerners did back then.
1860, 1960,2060 that is no excuse...it may be an explanation...but no excuse...
I didn't offer it as an excuse. I offered it as an explanation. It's very easy to view things through a 2013 lens and get high and mighty without considering that times used to be different and people are a product of their environment.
