It's definitely the counter top. My husband never has this problem and he does nothing in the kitchen. Coincedence, I thihnk not. |
I figured out for my wife that the holes were appearing where she rested her iPad whilst doing Sudoku !
I couldn't see that bugs would always eat the same area of the top(s) |
Having spent years battling this issue and spending MANY hours on the internet, I've concluded that the cause is abrasion but the source differs from person to person. I believe most people's holes are caused by counter abrasion. It would be interesting to now how tall everyone is here. I'm 6'4 and it's not counters for me. I believe it's my belts. Some worse than others but my current favorite belt has rather sharp corners which I believe are to blame. Points of abrasion for me are A, when I sit in my chair at work my shirt will get caught/pinched above my belt. I'm lean but I lean forward in my chair which causes a pinch. And B, my car's seat belt lies over my shirt and over my pant's belt, causing abrasion. I'm going to take the Dremmel to my belt corners and see if that helps. |
For me, it's the metal zipper on my Gap jeans that does it. |
I think its something to do with body |
It's the rough metal zipper on your jeans, think about how many times a day our tshirt comes in contact with the metal zipper on your jeans |
I see these posts are two years old. This just started happening to me this year. I wear mostly side zip skirts and rarely do anything in the kitchen these days! I still had holes in my tee tummies (and "best" j jill jersey shirts) when I began wearing them this spring - I have met three other women in the last three days who have this experience -all different ages and occupations - we are all mystified but I am leaning to the moth theory. |
But why only around the belly button (more or less)? I just noticed these holes in two tops as I was folding laundry last night. I'm leaning toward belt, pants, or seat belt, possibly counter top or similar abrasion. Or carrying something in front of us, like laundry baskets or boxes.... |
Definitely not moths. At least for me, the holes were in the same place on all my shirts and nowhere else. Moths are not that consistent! For me, I think it had something to do with the shirt rubbing on the relatively pointed edge of my pants near the zipper. I started wearing tank tops under my t shirts -- pulled down over the top of my pants, not tucked in -- and the problem disappeared. In winter, I wear any type of tank. They're actually helpful for staying warm. In spring/summer, I try to wear the lightest ones I can find. At the moment, my favorite are the Jockey camisoles at Target. Super light weight and they stop the holes! http://www.target.com/p/jky-by-jockey-women-s-nylon-stretch-cami-asssorted-colors-patterns/-/A-14471144 |
So glad to have found this topic. I started getting holes in my expensive shirts about a year ago. On the lower right by my belly button. It's driving me nuts. I thought I was going crazy! I thought the cleaning person was cutting holes in them so I started hiding the scissors. Now I see that many people have this problem. It seems to have nothing to do with weight or height or where we live. Moths don't eat cotton so I've eliminated that possibility. Still checking on carpet beetles. I hope that's not the problem. My shirts seem to be cotton modal blends and I'm wondering if that's the problem? Inferior fabric from China? My husband doesn't get holes in his heavier shirts. No kids and no cats. |
Whether expensive or in expensive I still get the holes in my T's. I am convinced the way I get them is the seat belt rubbing on my shirt with the button area fabric of my pants rubbing underneath. Also, anything else I rub up against. One person mentioned that this didn't happen until not too many years ago, so what is different? Clothing manufacturers need to step up and figure this out and fix it. Of course, then they wouldn't sell has many T shirts. I have thought about putting something over the fabric area of where the button goes through my pant waistband. Something like scotch tape, as fabric would slide over it. I am getting frustrated and desperate though so maybe duct tape! Duct tape can fix almost anything. They make such pretty prints now. If it showed when you lift up your arms, it wouldn't be as bad as getting holes in your shirt! If only it would work. Please, someone come up with a better idea!!! |
I've had this problem for a few years now. I've determined that it is the shirt rubbing on the zipper of my pants, I'm experimenting with a heavy piece of material where I cut a button hole in it. I've made a barrier between my zipper and shirt by connecting the piece of material on the button covering the zipper. So far, so good today - no holes yet,...... |
People , it's the darn zipper. I think it happens when you 're sitting.
Zipper tab cuts right through your shirt. Maybe they are made differently these days because this never was an issue in the 90's. What can we do about it? Not sure but it 's totally depressing to be ruining all my tops. Maybe start writing manufacturers ? |
I put a new T shirt on this morning and by noon I had my first pin hole in the lower front of my shirt. I also see lines like something is rubbing the fabric in the same area. I am convinced it is the zipper as well. I have also worn a tank under my T before and it does help, but it's summer and hot and not a time to layer. It is very frustrating. ![]() |
