WISC Scores

I had her tested through a private tester. I had heard some negative things about GMU so wanted I my child in a place that she would feel relaxed and comfortable. This is not to say if you have used GMU or are going to use GMU the feeling would not be the same, just for me I felt that a private tester would be better.

GBRS of 12 seems fine. My DC was accepted with a 9. From prior years on the past threads it seems like 130 fsiq would be the minimum. Anything over 135 is certainly good, but it's probably not a strict cutoff. I think what's probably more impt. is what the fsiq is versus the other test scores.

If you have lots of 120's and then the fsiq is 125, then that's not very compelling, because the committee probably feels 'see that's what we thought'. But if you have just 1 or 2 high scores that got you in the pool and then a 135 fsiq, it probably shows them 'yes, the high score is a real score'.

Sometimes you can tell by the comments attached to the gbrs what areas are perceived to be weaker than others and you can counter those with good wisc scores and an explanation in a parent letter. Good luck

Yes, I agree. Good luck!

yes, as I expected. Wholly consistent with everything I've read on here. GMU can't be bribed, so parents don't like it. The privates, well, you pay your $400 and tell 'em what you want it for and voila, a favorable result!
When the AAP committee people are going to figure this out is

I'm sure the AAP people see the names of the private testers and take that with a grain of salt.

No, the reason I went with a private tester is because I did not want a grad student giving the test. The person on the phone was very rude telling me how busy they were, well if they didn't have time to talk to me and make me feel comfortable why should they care abouit my child. The price was almost the same 380 at GMU 400 for private tester.

I suspect most private testers are quite honest. Heck, if it was found out they were cooking the scores, they would lose their license.

Yes, I agree

So glad to hear I am no the only one going through this right now. My child was denied with high CoGat scores and a low GBRS. We were told by her Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers she needed a more challenging setting and she would definitely get in to center. She was always 2 grade levels above in math and reading including this year. Her 2nd grade teacher is new and she is quiet and reserved, that is the only reason I can imagine the low GBRS.

WISC test 132 through a private tester. We did not even say why we wanted it done so there was no bias. We did no prep and just wanted to know the bottom line so we could rule out if we were just thinking our child was exceptional. I was also warned against GMU and it being grad students. Our private tester gave me the FSIQ after I waited 10-15 minutes, so I could make a decision for appeal before the official report.

Will 132 be enough with a low GBRS? I hope so. People on this board are saying it must be 138+ but I find that hard to believe (isn't 132 in the 98% range?) I'm in the same boat as you, so I'm hoping 132 is enough. Good luck!

I've heard others say a 132 is enough to overcome low GBRS, since it is a more reliable 98%'ile than Cogat/NNAT because WISC is an individualized test. But in the end, we're all just speculating. Am in the same boat (hoping WISC overcomes GBRS). Definitely pulling for you both, good luck!

We are in the same boat and people advice us that FSIQ 132 is good enough but also they look at individual VCI and PRI scores. Based on your FSIQ score one of them must be more 130 - i believe and your kid will have pretty much chances to getting to AAP. BTW- did you take any other tests along with WISC, if so what are the scores please.

We did not do any other tests. The WISC for $450 was enough. We do have 2 letters of recommendation from other adults who work closely with our child and they also have kids at center. The letters point out examples of her gifted qualities. I have read that reporting the GAI is also important because that gives the IQ range using the VCI and the PRI. For our child the GAI is 136 so we are hoping this is enough.

Thanks! And that is pretty good and hope everything works better for your child.
