My kids have had so many summatives rescheduled or postponed or pushed down the road because teachers haven't been able to cover the material needed.

We really haven't had that many unplanned days off. My math classes are one block behind where they were last year.

I fully agree we've had a boat load of holidays and planned days off, but we will be finishing 3rd quarter at exactly the same spot I was at last year, minus the "catch up day" i gave kids at the end of last quarter since I didn't want to start a new unit.
not all ES have the same early release day each month

Some. Of. Us. Have. To. Work.

Eleven(?) weather and other unexpected closing are factored into the calendar. Check back after those are used up.

The problem is not the weather. It’s the calendar which is a travesty and needs to be changed ASAP to prioritize full weeks of instruction

You know the problem isn’t the weather. It’s the absolute nonsensical hole we’ve dug ourselves into of giving a day off for every religious holiday and then an equivalent number of teacher work days. It’s absurd, this county is absurd, and this is why I want out for my family as soon as possible. I’m sorry for those who have no choice but to stay, truly.

Truly. This feels like the responsible decision to make. At the same time, elementary kids already have an early release day Wednesday and they all have a day off for a religious holiday (which is absurd for a public school system) on Friday. It is so egregious but I know I will just be told to suck it up or go private.

I agree. This might be a good decision but we’ve had other days off that didn’t make sense. I’m a teacher and believe these planned days off in the middle of weeks are so disruptive! A Tuesday here, a Thursday there. Does anyone like this? I think the best work days and professional development days are the ones tacked onto the end of a longer vacation, and those seem to work well for families, too. As for some of the religious holidays we have off now, I think not allowing testing on those days and considering them excused absences might be adequate.

I wish the decision makers could be as reasonable as you!

Please quell my severe storm anxiety and tell me this storm will break apart crossing over the mountains as it approaches Ffx Co.

Closing schools early has me spooked even more.

The derecho (a "rare" storm like this current predicted one) 12 yrs ago still has me nervous during severe weather.

2:30-3:25 dark clouds on the radar. The early kiss and ride parents and risk adverse parents will say f- that and come in to get “just their child”. Repeat 5-6 times per classroom spread out just enough that by the time you get the kids settled and ready to listen, the speaker will beep again. The front office is clearly stressed by their voices over the speaker.. Zero concentration is going on.

3:15 walker parents appear at the back door wanting their kids because of the storm. We have to tell them to go to the office. Announcements to classrooms continue…

3:25 storm hits- kids are staring at windows, but packed up and ready to go. Dismissal should start in 5 minutes

3:30 (dismissal bell rings) school wide announcement: teachers please hold your kids in the classroom none of the busses are here.

3:35 tornado watch- go to the hallway!

3:45 all clear return to the classroom! Buses still aren’t here, but parents can receive their children.

3:55- buses trickle in…the office is manically sending out emails to remind parents to call transportation not the school about buses

There wasn’t any instruction after about 2:30 and everyone gets home late, but hey the what about the CALENDAR people are happy!

Let’s all hope the storms hit after 5:00!

wow, just wow.

I was wrong. Very very wrong. The what about the calendar people are very UNHAPPY. Weird how quickly the weather thread turned to NO IT IS THE CALENDAR within an hour. Almost like you are really angry about the weather, but realized that can’t be controlled so you channel your anger into THE CALENDAR!!!

Even people who celebrate Eid want to be in school. The closures have been out of hand!
