Schools closed for students Monday Feb 2

Anonymous
Lets be honest, the real reason that schools aren't open yet is that private citizens(including many of the people in this forum if I had to guess) have bought up the entire supply of ice melt. Not only is this terrible for the environment as it will inevitably leak into the water supply it also prevents the county from obtaining the necessary supplies all so you can clear your driveway a bit faster. Well guess what? Your driveway might be clear but schools are still closed.

I was thinking a 2 hour delay every day next week might happen.

I dont want any more days off, nor do I want to come in for a staff development day or whatever they are throwing together tomorrow.

I think it's a grading and planning day?

We’ve all had grades done since last week. This is ridiculous. Either open for real or don’t make us drive there just to sit and stare.

This is ridiculous. Teachers need more time to grade ever since the county implemented this new grading policy. Grading software simply isn't built to handle these kinds of complex operations. Take it from a MIT graduate and former NASA employee.

So I have to take off tomorrow to watch my kids who don't have school or bring them with me. This is dumb. Grades have been done for days. Send the kids too...

The school system is not in charge of your childcare. Good thing for you though, you seem to have options.

I have to go to jury duty tomorrow and leave my kids at home. Because the MoCo county courts have been open in Rockville since last Wednesday. MCPS just has a special kind of inertia.

Fairfax is open

PG remote learning

LCPS and HCPSS 2 hour delay

We are the only ones closed

Fairfax is closed, too.

Arlington is also closed tomorrow.

They have nearly the same land area, but many more mountains and thus more treacherous roads, and they also had more snowfall. MCPS spends about 15% more per student than WCPS.

WCPS was open with a 2-hour delay on Friday, and will be fully open tomorrow.

How can a poorer, more mountainous county pull off opening schools but we cannot?

NYC (poorer, larger) was open on Monday (virtual) and from Tuesday in person.
DCPS (poorer) was open virtual asynchronous (Wednesday) and in person Thursday, Friday.

Alexandria was open virtual from Wednesday onwards. Baltimore, Anne Arundel also had online learning.

McPS has badly written emails and snow day videos from Taylor.

Right about now I am wishing I had bought a home in any other district other than MoCo. MCPS just isn’t well managed.

Girl most of us on DCUM with kids who need "watching" are sending them to childcare tomorrow. There are also some places doing camps tomorrow. Sorry if that makes your day less joyful, for some reason.

Surely you didn’t fall for a troll…

That's not a troll. It's just a person who is high and thinks they are being funny and clever.

That's not true. I just got a text from my cousin who is a counselor in PG county and she said that they are fully off tomorrow.

Their website says two hour delay.

That's ridiculous. Neither MCPS nor MoCo buy their ice melt from the local Home Depot.

And schools are clear. And roads and sidewalks are passable. Taylor just doesn't know how to take the W.

Yeah, but it's strongly hinted that Tuesday will be open with a delay. They didn't put out the same type of moronic message that MCPS did.

I'm PP who wrote about Washington County. I don't consider DC or NYC a fair comparison as they are mostly urban, so you don't have side roads in the forest like you do in MoCo (if you've ever visited Butler's Orchard, I'm talking about roads like that). But that's also why I think Washington County is a fair comparison, because they have land area and road "diversity" that's similar.

The message said all schools are ready.

So then why the closure?

PGCPS is 2 hour delay and they addressed specific neighborhood concerns while recognizing that they can't keep the entire county shut down. Why can't MCPS do the same?

Because they don't want to have a real day of work
