I was thinking a 2 hour delay every day next week might happen.

I dont want any more days off, nor do I want to come in for a staff development day or whatever they are throwing together tomorrow.

I think it's a grading and planning day?

We’ve all had grades done since last week. This is ridiculous. Either open for real or don’t make us drive there just to sit and stare.

This is ridiculous. Teachers need more time to grade ever since the county implemented this new grading policy. Grading software simply isn't built to handle these kinds of complex operations. Take it from a MIT graduate and former NASA employee.

So I have to take off tomorrow to watch my kids who don't have school or bring them with me. This is dumb. Grades have been done for days. Send the kids too...

The school system is not in charge of your childcare. Good thing for you though, you seem to have options.

Base is the least common denominator. Handling of the storm is just a symptom of a system without accountability and self entitlement. Such a joke for a system with billions in budget.

Opening is the bare minimum a school needs to do. And Taylor can't even figure that out. This administration isn't going to be able to tackle the bigger problems.

This is remarkably tone-deaf considering other parents have now had to take 5 days off.

Teachers that complain about not having time for planning… now is the time to do it.

That wasn't a teacher. That was an angry parent pretending to be a teacher to renew the teacher vitriol (as if they haven't had enough this past week)

Yes, roads and sidewalks are ready. Get out more. Maybe MCPS needs to adjust bus routes to bigger roads. That's on mcps, not the county.

It’s cute you think bigger roads aren’t attached to sidewalks. Perhaps you are the one who needs to get out more, darling.

Too late to do it now.

Maybe next year. Support whatever plan MCPS develops rather than tearing it down so we get nothing.

If MCPS posts their lesson plans for virtual school days as part of the plan, then maybe there's a reasonable discussion to be had. But it also needs to address how they'll either provide or make-up special education supports and services. Kids will miss therapy, and some won't be able to learn virtually without their supports, requiring remediation outside of normal school hours.

Let's compare to Washington County, MD, about an hour up 270/70 from MoCo.

They have nearly the same land area, but many more mountains and thus more treacherous roads, and they also had more snowfall. MCPS spends about 15% more per student than WCPS.

WCPS was open with a 2-hour delay on Friday, and will be fully open tomorrow.

How can a poorer, more mountainous county pull off opening schools but we cannot?

Sidewalks are fine. People have been walking on sidewalks. The claim is buses physically can't get through roads. If that's true, they need to shift routes.

I'm fine with him just resigning in disgrace.

Leaders have to make tough and unpopular decisions sometimes. You don’t know all the variables that went into the decision he made.

We know what he's chosen to tell us. Which is nonsensical given the snow isn't going anywhere. He clearly doesn't have a real plan for reopening. Whether you agree with tomorrow's closure or not, that shouldn't be acceptable to anyone.

He and the staff he has chosen to lead district operations are not qualified to run MCPS. Thomas, Adnan, and Cat should all resign.

Yeah, the lack of even submitting a virtual learning plan for this year is total malpractice on his part. Too scared of all the whiny "noooo, anything with the words Virtual Learning in it must be terrible and I will fight it to the death" folks on here, presumably. But part of being a leader is doing the right thing for kids even when it'll make people mad at you.

(Also, if the damn virtual learning haters would just shut up, that would be nice too. No one is going to force your kids into a whole year of virtual, we promise, so get a grip. Freaking out about a few days of it is absolutely ridiculous.)

Obviously people disagree with you. The district can and should make up school days. Virtual is not a good alternative to actual school days.

But it is a good alternative to the half days we're gonna get at the end of the year

+1 it’s a very good alternative to the half days of videos that were played for my kids in the end of June. If moco can’t seem to get the snow shoveled, it needs to make a virtual learning contingency plan because February is also going to have snow.

Many of us have been working throughout the snow days. I put in an entire 40 hours grading and updating plans.

We’ve said it of times on this site: the work never ends for a teacher.

So stop with the farce that we’re all lazy and taking luxurious days off.

No, because MCPS has a clear and consistent history of screwing over kids with special needs when they attempt virtual. MCPS should not be allowed to go virtual until it demonstrates how it will support those students.

NYC (poorer, larger) was open on Monday (virtual) and from Tuesday in person.
DCPS (poorer) was open virtual asynchronous (Wednesday) and in person Thursday, Friday.

Alexandria was open virtual from Wednesday onwards. Baltimore, Anne Arundel also had online learning.

McPS has badly written emails and snow day videos from Taylor.

When the rest of us complete our work assignments, we get more work.

Go help your fellow teachers.
