Schools closed for students Monday Feb 2

So then why the closure?

Because kids can't safely walk to school and they can't pick up students with disabilities. They lay that out in the message. The problem is this is unlikely to change any time soon.

MCPS is too big. And everything becomes the least common denominator. Can’t make everybody happy and nobody wins.

Tomorrow is Groundhog Day. We’ll wake up and find out whether MCPS will be closed for another 6 weeks.

Maybe the expectation is that teachers & other school based staff are going in to shovel sidewalks and clear the roads? Those were the reasons that Dr Taylor gave for MCPS to be closed tomorrow for students.

Our grading was done over the snow days because we were told it was due when we came back and nobody expected teachers to come back but not students. I’m sure most of our planning is also done.

I have no problems going back, but can’t see the reasons for school not opening for students going away anytime soon. Exactly when are we supposed to have a long stretch of non-freezing weather to melt the ice?

Are the kids in Frederick County and the other MD counties that are open magically safer than the MoCo kids?

Because they don't want to have a real day of work

You're so boring. Time to log off and get a real life.

Schools are ready, roads and side walks are not.

Ask Daddy Trump to transport kids in his helicopters.

Nope, but other counties are less litigious.

Prove it. I don’t buy that for a second.

I was resigned to a week's closure, but this is complete and utter nonsense. Conditions won't change this week. I've seen entire families walking on ice and snow without any issues, mine included, so if MCPS is hiding behind bad plowing by the county on side streets and accessibility concerns for door-to-door buses, it's a scandal. I've had to drive around these past few days, and I am sure buses could get into most streets. Their routes would take longer, of course and kids might arrive late to school, but tardies could be excused for this week.

If they really want to hang their hat on kids in wheelchairs, then I suggest they pay for emergency plowing of their specific addresses ASAP. Stop hijacking the thousands of families who need to get back to normal.

Don't forget AP exams are in May, and many APs cannot be self-studied. High schoolers need to learn their entire AP curriculum before May - extending the school year is useless for them.

Your kids don't ride the bus. If they did, you would not be sure of yourself.

Other counties are not as densely populated as MCPS and it leads to much fewer walkers and less small neighborhood streets. Picking kids up at the end of their rural driveways is not an issue. Navigating a bus through Silver Spring is.

Those are often in walk zones. People have been walking all week.

I also think Silver Spring is a problem spot.

Private school parent here and our school in Moco on a side street has been open on time since Thursday after 3 days of virtual school. Busses from many areas including VA and Frederick are transporting students on time.
