So, you are saying that you don't learn anything by playing an instrument? Ok. Sure. https://creyos.com/blog/how-playing-an-instrument-benefits-your-brain |
| I think your son is very mature for a freshman and it has to be his choice. Telling band teacher that he has to miss the concert is the right move. Kids miss classes because of concerts, sports, being sick, but some classes are more difficult to catch up than the others. If he's not a soloist then it really is not a problem. |
You can learn by playing an instrument but still learn more in any particular hour by going to a class than playing in a particular concert. |
He can't. It's a condition of being in AYPO orchestras that you have to be in school orchestra/band. And they do in fact, check. |
| It should be brought to the Principal's attention. This is a problem. Not presented as a complaint against either teacher, but this is a problem. The Principal needs to know. |
No, I’m not joking. All the teacher has to do is prop up an iPad or cellphone. I’m a teacher and every teacher in our building was required to videotape a lesson twice in the last couple weeks and it took me about one minute to angle the iPad and press record. NBD. |
The principal likely does, and has signed off. This is not some sort of unusual situation. |
| DC 8th grader has to miss classes sometimes entire school day for school orchestra events, then make up by watching videos etc and complete missed classwork. School says students are responsible for missed work even its school event. It’s not allowed to miss school orchestra events since it’s graded. |
+1. The absence is excused and the work is made up. Happens all the time. Should not create any issues, especially for good students. |
Really, tell me where that is published? |
Then participate fully in the band. |
| Or don't. The student will decide their priorities. |
|
Imagine kids sick and can’t go to school and miss the “life or death” class, or miss the “one class that will decide your path to the Ivy”.
This is not about which one more important. Please honor the class he signed up for include the consequences. The mid day concert is graded, and it will counted as his overall GPA, and I believe the timing for the concert is not something that the band leader has a say. Lesson learned don’t signup for band next time. Give up the AYPO. Or.. work on it ! Asked if it is allow to be recorded, asked if he can attend the next class. |
Band IS education. Mastering an instrument is not easier than any very hard class. |
| He's made his decision and I would go with it OP. Band is important but so is class and he prefers class. |
