Shhhhh. they don't like to think of themselves that way because they moved to DC/Va from Bergen County. In their minds, they are still Tri-State

Oh on your street. So you guys are the intellectual kings. Smart kids are going where they will be happy and also where they may receive a free education on merit money down south. No one cares about Ivy anymore. It is a down brand.

No one cares about Ivy? Bwaaaaaahhhhhhh have you actually spent time on this board? lol

At this point it's mostly just the strivers from the public magnets who apply to all 8 Ivies. BECAUSE IVY DID YOU HEAR ME?? IVY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the middle aged Asian dads in this site care A LOT! Especially remedial math at Harvard guy!

Can’t assume they’re Asian. Asian parent here and some of us have kids who aren’t tracked for Multivariable calculus in high school.

Some Asian parents have kids at SEC schools.

Vanderbilt is very Asian now.

These are not kids with top stats so that's part of it, but I still wonder how much bang for the buck the degree gives them when many want to move back north in 4 years.

I'm in CA in the bay area. You get a TCU, SMU, Auburn kid every now and then but in general nobody except low stats kids ever go to Souothern schools and it is rare for them as well. Just not attractive to people out here.

Everyone knows that Californians stay in California if they're at all price sensitive. Why go to, say, Florida or Tennessee when SDSU is right down the highway?

Folks, the nominal numbers of kids that OP’s percentages translate into for the schools listed in total is like 2,000 kids.

Thats just a drop in the bucket if the number of kids from the northeast going to college.

I have noticed a trend of students in the class of 2025 opting not to attend any schools in the south even though they were accepted. Years prior I saw a lot more students opting to attend schools in the south.

Why do you think they’re opting not to attend? If they are opting not to go for political reasons, why did they even apply in the first place?

NP here. Some are saying they want to stay away from the political craziness and others are picking schools that have better reputations academically. The weather isn't the biggest draw anymore.

Then, as I said, why even apply in the first place? It’s not like the political craziness only cropped up within the past few months…

It's called having options. My DD's friend got into Kentucky and LSU for example but ultimately decided to go to Wisconsin.

That’s not a fair comparison. That kid would go south if they got in a top SEC flagship like UGA or UF.

+1. Or if they didn’t get into Wisconsin.

UGA/UF vs Wisconsin is a coin flip between peers.

Not, UGA and Wisconsin are peers but UF is solidly higher than both.

There is a UF booster posting a lot lately who needs to return to earth.

Will smart kids from the Northeast continue to "flock" to this hellscape?

Yes! And so few Jews to harass down south!

OOS doesn't necessarily mean NE.

It’s common knowledge that most OOS kids come from the NE.

I’m from TN and knew a ton of kids who went to university of Alabama from TN, MS, GA, etc all over the South. I would guess many OOS students are from the south because that’s predominantly who wants to go to school in the south.

Agree, DH and I are both from the Northeast (NY area for one, NE the other). We now live in the Triangle area and almost everyone either stays in state or in the region. Public high school that skews elite/wealthy.

Amazed at how many are going south! Qualify by not seeing Bama, Auburn, or UFlorida decals on Teslas. Most families are independents or Republicans not lefties

The truth is, the smart kids are only after a few of the southern schools: UGA, UF, Clemson, UNC, Vanderbilt. No one with good stats is claiming Bama is their dream school. Its a safety school at best.

Not sure Clemson is in that group but lots of kids are heading South from our full pay town.

The percentage of students from the Northeast has grown in the SEC, but pure numbers wise that may not be a lot of kids.

People often want to stay in their region. It makes sense that most out of staters at Alabama are from the Southeast. Iowa's is a popular School for kids from the Chicago area, Not so many East or West coast kids even though it is a solid school.

Nice try at sneaking Clemson into that list. Clemson also isn’t in the SEC. UNC isn’t either but at least they’re a peer to UGA, UF, Vandy.

LSU
+486.0%

Went from 100 kid to 586 kids...out of a total of nearly 33,000 kids at LSU

All top 20s are very Asian, except maybe Notre Dame.

There are also lots of kids in the Northeast heading south to non-SEC schools like Wake Forest, Tulane, Duke and UMiami (in addition to UNC, Clemson, Duke).
