Every kid is different. Some prefer Knoxville to Athens and some prefer Athens to Knoxville. Choosing which school feels right is totally subjective and dumb to argue about. Choosing a school based solely on objective measures like ranking and acceptance rate is also dumb.

Becoming more popular doesn’t mean UTK is close to UGA. It’s just caught up to SC and Auburn.

Did I say it was close to UGA? Clearly you missed my point…which was that this doesn’t matter.

You acknowledge UGA is superior?

I acknowledge UGA is higher ranked and lower acceptance rate but I think whether or not that makes it superior is subjective and depends on the kid.

The South has many deficiencies but it’s also much more diverse than New England and you’re much more likely to interact with black people, lower income people, and people of other different backgrounds in the South than in New England. A lot of major cities in the south: Memphis, New Orleans, Birmingham, Montgomery, Baton Rouge, Jackson MS all have a majority black population and others like Atlanta and Savannah are about 1/2 black. You just don’t have that in New England and I think new Englanders tend to view the south as “the good old boys” and southern belles stereotype and overlooking the cultural impact of black people and lower income families who are actually the majority and black culture is the dominant culture in much of the south.

Sure, but most choose UGA if they have the choice.

You’re saying that bc that’s what you or those in your circle would choose, not based on any actual info/data you have (bc that data doesn’t exist).

In the SEC my kid applied to and was admitted to UT Austin, UF and UTK all OOS. He selected a school outside of the SEC ultimately, but really liked the campus and vibe at UTK as well as the other two. He did not consider UGA. Why is this so hard for you?

Of course the data exists. Compare the yield rates and report back.

Well, in that case, Ivy League schools are no better than Ole Miss.

So cite the data then. Go ahead. The data, of course, is not simply yield rate bc we’re talking about kids choosing between 2 schools, not how many admitted students ultimately go to 1 school.

That’s a disingenuous thing to say. Ivy League schools are much higher ranked and have a much better reputation. Whether or not those facts make the schools “superior” is a matter of opinion. But also UTK and UGA are much more comparable than Harvard and ole Miss and everyone knows that.

Yield data tells us how attractive a school is. You can pull that if you want but you already know which college yields better.

Wow…..what an amazing thread….It like watching a lot of bad drivers argue about whether a Passat is a better car than a Beetle….

While Passat and Beetle may have the same ownership, I believe Beetle is a land grant company, whereas Passat is completely private. Plus Beetle is built in Bavaria, which is part of the south, while Passat is built in northern Prussia, which has that wonderful teutonic heritage, and where, frankly, most of the quality car companies come from historically.
