Mother in law won't get pertussis vaccine

Do babies die from not getting Prevnar and the HIB vaccination?

That would be fine, if what they do didn't affect our own lives and more importantly, that of our children. Your "live and let live" philosophy doesn't apply here, sorry.

If you believe vaccines work then you have nothing to worry about. If you believe newborns will be harmed then put them in a plastic bubble because you don't know what people have been vaxed for and what they have declined. Do not assume that people do not have the right to refuse even if they are caring for your precious boo boo.

Or ask for a vax to keep the baby in until it can be vaxed for everything.

You people who refuse to get it due to your own power trip issues are the selfish ones. parents like us are obnodious? People like you are obnoxious. Get over yourself. I'm glad I'm not relates to any of you! Lol. Open your mind and educate your small minds rather than choosing to remain stubborn in your ways and naive.

Sure, they can refuse. They just won't care for my baby until he has had his shots. Simple.

That doesn't mean I have to keep my baby in a bubble. While I wish everyone would be responsible and stay up to date with their vaccinations as a service to public health, there is a difference between regular close contact and occasional casual encounters.

Hi All,
Do all daycare providers have these shots?? Are they required to get them?

Nobody "has to" get the vaccine -- they just need to not be around the new baby until it can get a few of it's own doses.

Even if the baby doesn't die from pertussis, it is still a bitch. Imagine your tiny bay in the ICU, getting IV's and being all sick because some self arse was all freedum, derp me me me, you CAN'T MAKE ME!. If that is how your MIL is, just don't let her see the baby until it has the vaccines.

Here is how we handled it. We sent an email to close friends and family, one friend did get all "We didn't do that when I was a baby" to which I replied, "30 years ago the situation was different." I stood firm even if the antivaxxers and such got offended -- I don't care, I'm going to protect my baby and that is priority #1.

Here was our email:

Hey guys--

Besides an election tomorrow, we haver another big event on the horizon -- Baby XYZ is just a few short months away from arrival!

Please read this article http://seattlemamadoc.seattlechildrens.org/cocoon-a-newborn-only-an-email-away/

We are asking that everyone who is going to be near the baby when it is fresh and new would please be up to date on their vaccines & booster shots. If you start now you can spread them out. Especially important are the flu shot and the Tdap booster (whooping cough is becoming a big deal)

Many bugs come into the babysphere via a plane ride so that is something to keep in mind with so many of you far away.

You can get most of these at a cvs minute clinic, Walgreens has them and you can book online, you can even ask for the thimerosal-free flu vaccine (which is what my OB told me to do) which is just a preservative-free version if that is a concern for you. It took me like 10 minutes at Walgreens and was covered by insurance.

Thank you for your consideration.

With love,

Everyone was supportive and understood that we are just doing the prudent thing amidst an outbreak.

Good luck -- stand firm!

I realize this is a 3 year old question but I have to respond, my 3month old contracted pertussis a week before her vacc. And was hospitalized for a week, I literally watched her sleep everytime she slept for 3 Weeks. Their little lungs are so young its hard for them to catch their breathe, babies are DYING from this everywhere!! Unfortunately I and her caregivers (MIL, hubb) were not vaccinated b/c we didn't know to be, fortunately I have a very proactive pedi that immediately admitted her to hospital, the hospital d/c us after one day! But Dr immediately admitted us to another till she was stable. The problem is it can be random when they cough and start out like a regular cough so unless the Dr happens to hear their cough they wont know. YouTube pertussis babies and you'll see many have died from this, mine would cough so hard she would turn purple. I cannot stress enough the grave seriousness of this epidemic. I wish I had taken more care, not let anyone near her who had been sick, kept her @ home for first 6 Weeks ect as a new mom I was ignorant. Get vaccinated and take control over your babies health if ppl wont get vax keep them far far away

I hope your baby made a full recovery and is safe now. Thank you for sharing your story!

Wow!! Don't know how my generation managed to raise our kids to adulthood! My daughter is 46; she went to the grocery with me when she was two weeks old (my family did have to eat). I breastfed for five months, and she never even had a cold until she was 18 months old. Neither she nor the children of anyone I have known for the last 50 years ever got whooping cough! Of course, we actually got our kids vaccinated against whatever we could as soon as we could, and of course we washed our hands for the first couple of months.

What are young mothers who have to go back to work at 6 weeks--of necessity putting their children in daycare--going to do??? (And yes, I think a 6-week maternity leave is a crime against nature.) How do young mothers grocery shop? Go to the doctor? Go to church?Take their babies for a walk? I can see being careful with a preemie or an otherwise fragile baby, but really--I would think that strep, for example, would be much more prevalent and much more dangerous than whooping cough to most babies!

A lot of people have stopped vaccinating in the last 50 years, Grumpy Granny, and pertussis is actually a real risk now.

I have seen infants with pertussis and it is not pretty.

40 years ago we had the lowest rates of pertussis infections - there have been tremendous increases in infection rates over the last 10 years alone.

I think it's fairly ignorant to suggest strep throat is more dangerous to babies than whooping cough. More prevelant, yes, more dangerous, no.

I'm not sure why you resurrected a year old thread, Grumpy Granny, but maybe you should sign off as "Ignorant Granny".
