I am having the same problem. I am not only furious but also offended that she shows no respect for my
Concerns for MY child. It's true that people are Responsible for their own health & shouldn't be told to get a vaccine but when it comes to me Protecting my baby I think that I have that right to request that loved ones get the vaccine. And if they still won't them guess who's not seeing the baby in it's first months of life. If their pride & subborness is worth that than so be it. |
| How are you people saying it's selfish to ask people to et the vaccine. Are we asking for ourselves? We are trying to protect our babies. You people who refuse to get it due to your own power trip issues are the selfish ones. parents like us are obnodious? People like you are obnoxious. Get over yourself. I'm glad I'm not relates to any of you! Lol. Open your mind and educate your small minds rather than choosing to remain stubborn in your ways and naive. |

My doctor also recommended it. DH already got the shot and his parents are both getting it. My father is over 65 and laughed it off so I just said fine come after the baby gets her shots. My sister and mother want to visit and I'm going to ask them to get the shot if they want to come before 2 months (well not sure if we need to wait until 4, have to ask my doctor).
You anti-vaccine people suck. Your children help spread disease - frankly I think they should allow lawsuits for that. |
If your children have had the vaccinations, then why are you worried about your kids getting sick? Oh wait, yea, I know, vaccines actually aren't 100% effective, so even if you've had the shots not only have you opened up yourself to dangerous side effects, you are always operating in the misguided belief that you won't get sick. And the vaccinations wear off anyway over time. Me, I was born in the 1950's, had the two vaccinations that were available at the time - had a bad reaction to both. Caught all the childhood diseases (including pertussis) and survived. I'm a happy, healthy, intelligent, well-read 54 year old, prefer to eat organic food, take no prescription medicines, have only had one flu shot when I had to travel extensively during flu season (felt sick as a dog afterward) have no medical issues and I intend to stay that way. We live in the USA. We spout to all the world what a wonderful life we have - shouting about our freedom, individual rights and personal expression. If some people want their children vaccinated, that's fine by me. I only hope that they do not do so uninformed as to the side effects. I will not be getting the pertussis vaccination despite the medical profession trying to tell me that my natural immunity wears off over time. It does not. Only vaccinated immunity lessens over time. |

I'm sorry. I did not intend to use the quote in my above remarks. Mine was a general opinion regarding the vaccine argument. While I understand that a child under 2 months has not had all it's vaccinations, please also bear in mind that the likelihood of your older parents being exposed to whooping cough is extremely low. Lower than any of the risks of that person having the vaccination. I hope that if ANY visitors who are coughing and sneezing or feel under the weather, are proposing on visiting a newborn, they use COMMON SENSE and wait until they feel better.
There is no need to BAN grandparents or other close family members from a short visit with their new family member. Everybody just needs to use common sense when visiting or handling a new baby. |
| while I think your MIL is being a b@tch, I also think the risk is low here. I did not get a a pertussis vaccine and neither did my hubby. Our baby has had her first shot in the DTAP series, so she is partially vaccinated. But think of all the ppl who handle your baby before they get that shot -- the doctors, nurses, friends, family and you can't tell them all to get vaccinated. |

Sweden poster / anyone who knows: how come Sweden have 4 episodes of vaccination at 0, 3, 5, and 12 while, here we have 5 at 0, 2,4,6 and 12?

actual all the medical personnel working with babies are vaccinated. |

I've seen a lot of misinformation on this post....best place to learn about who should be vaccinated, what vaccine to get (many different vaccines have a pertussis component and which you get depends on your age).
http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pertussis/default.htm For instance I saw in a bunch of earlier posts that the vaccine isn't "safe" for individuals over 65. This is untrue. When you are looking medications and in particular vaccines, you are looking at what is "safe" and just importantly what is "effective". In general, the problem with vaccines for person's over 65 is that they loose their effectiveness. This is just a natural component of aging. A person's immune system is most able to adapt to new exposures (including vaccines) when you are younger. |

Looking at some of the posts it looks like the world upside down!
Asking to people who will be in a close contact during the first months of the baby to get vaccinated against those few extremely dangerous diseases is a most normal thing in the world. The contrary would be simply irresponsible. Parents are not asking that for themselves, but for their little ones, who are too small to be vaccinated, and are extremely vulnerable. And even though it seems rare, yes, death and life-time complications to those diseases still happen even in developed countries simply because the adults around those babies were selfish enough not to vaccinate themselves. I am wondering if those MILs really care about their grand children when they are able to put their lives at risk because of their stubbornness based on stupid believes. There are different vaccine preparations so for example for those having as an excuse allergy to eggs, there are vaccines with no eggs. There is very rarely a real excuse, just lack of concern for babies and stubbornness. |
| everyone please get a life and stop freaking out over what other people (MILs included) choose to do with theirs |
I am curious abiut this too --- why only 4 episodes of vaccination in European countries? |
That would be fine, if what they do didn't affect our own lives and more importantly, that of our children. Your "live and let live" philosophy doesn't apply here, sorry. |
Agree, while it's rare for infants to die from pertussis, it does happen. http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/10/20/california.whooping.cough/index.html |
