| What ever happened to being reasonable? Some people have a baby and lose all sight of it. Luckily I don't come into contact with any such people in my life. FURIOUS that someone wouldn't get a vaccination at your request? Really? Talk about being blinded by paranoia. |
Where's the LIKE button? |
And, anti-statistical analysis, and anti-science...and reading propaganda and anectodal stories is not "research". |
Were they paralyzed at some point after the H1N1 vaccine, which millions of people got, or due to the H1N1 vaccine? The vaccine scaremongers tend to ignore things like "causation" so I'm skeptical of this story... |
You are so full of it! |
I have never heard this either, and I had twins 4 months ago. OP, you are WAY overreacting. |
|
OP, you are right to be concerned. My doctor said I probably had it but, did not do the nose swab to confirm and therefore did not report it. The doctor did treat it appropriately though with antibiotics. My family, from a very large state with more state requirements of public health hazards than Maryland were shocked the doctor did not test me and I did not know to ask.
There are more cases of pertussis out there that have not been diagnosed. Whatever I had if it is debatable would have killed someone who is frail. I am a mom in Bethesda who visited a doctor in Bethesda. OP, you are not overreacting. |

I just read a few of the comments and was irritated about the lack of simpathy for the mother. Going through pregnancy makes you totally paranoid about everything. A lot of that is brought on by unsolicited advice anyways. I can't tell you how many people chastised me for a million things when I was pregnant (wearing heels, drinking coffee, etc...) as if you're not obsessed enough about giving your baby every opportunity for the best health, nutrition, ...
If it makes you sleep better at night for your MIL to get the vaccine, then she should suck it up and get it, unless there is a good chance that it could do her harm or something. You are the mother and serve as the gate keeper for who gets to visit. If it makes you uncomfortable that she's not vaccinated, then she can't visit. |
| OP, I am with you. I didn't read through all the posts so I don't know if you added an update, but I am very curious about why your MIL refuses to get the shot. In any case, you're in charge of who gets contact with your baby and I encourage you to set whatever limits you want. There are people who aren't concerned about things like this and that's their right. I hope it works out for them. I am pretty careful about things like this and it works for me. I have a 14 month old and I always had people wash their hands carefully before holding him when he was a newborn, etc. My cousin had a baby a few months later and she wasn't so careful, she thought it would "build up" the baby's immune system. Her baby was hospitalized at 2.5 months with pneumonia and went through hell. |
| It's true, you can't make your mother in law get the vaccine. But it is also true that the consequences for her decision could be that you don't let her see the baby until the baby has had his/her 2nd pertussis vaccine at 4 months. Simple as that. In California, particularly southern California, there is an epidemic going on. Ten babies have died, if not all- most under two months. |
| I agree. You are the gatekeeper for your child and have the responsibility to protect them. If you feel that the vaccine is necessary then it is your decision. If your MIL does not get the vaccine, then you have the right to exclude her from seeing the child. You are the parent and what you say goes. Your MIL has to live with the consequences of her decision. It does not make you paranoid or overprotective. You did your research and made your decision. Don't apologize for it or let anyone else bully you into make a decision for YOUR child that you are not comfortable with. Good for you for speaking up as to your wishes for your child. |
| OP here is a bit of advice that you need to take seriously. As a first-time mother you will be tempted to go to extremes for your child. There may be a very good reason why your MIL cannot have the pertussis vaccine. Have you asked her? Also, and this is of the utmost importance, after your child is born don't call the ped constantly, because when you do it like the boy who cried wolf, and you will become known as a PIA to MD and staff. |
Hum... OP has a 2y old already. |
Why, then, this level of paranoia? I bet she does call the Ped every time the kid coughs. |
