Because it costs you nothing to call someone by the name or pronouns they want to be called. It makes them feel happy and accepted and safe and it's easy to do. Not doing so makes them feel not accepted and not safe and makes it into a much bigger issue than necessary. Refusing to adopt someone's chosen pronouns feels like a lot of effort, where the entire point is to be a jerk and make another person feel bad.

Can you explain why it's so important to you to not give someone such a small thing that is so important to them? Do you care about making people feel happy safe and accepted? Do you specifically want to send the message that they should not feel happy safe and accepted?

- I live in a blue state and the progressive policies towards the homeless cannot be described as anything other than exceptionally cruel. Democrats push policies that have people die on the street.

If you were angered by the prolonged school shut downs (as was I as a dem) and concerned about crime in your community, then the rationale thing is to vote for more moderate or conservative candidates for local government. In fact I have personally done so. Homelessness is also a local government issue. Medical gender transitioning of children is something that will get worked out within the medical community.

None of this is going to be fixed by Trump. Not a single thing you mentioned at all is under the control of this administration and in fact the MAGA policies at the national level will just push local communities that are already blue to become even more progressive in response, so congrats you have just contributed to making things worse.

PP here. Where did I say that would be fixed by Trump? I don’t think any of these issues will be fixed by Trump and I didn’t vote for Trump, I voted for Harris. The PP asked for examples of Democratic cruelty and I provided them.

I see little difference between the parties as far as lack of empathy goes. The Democrats are cruel, but they lie about it (to themselves and others) because it is important for them to be perceived as empathetic even when they are being exceptionally cruel. The Republicans are also cruel, but they do not lie about it to themselves or others. The difference between the parties is not actual empathy but self-perception of empathy.

I do think it is.
We are forced to be polite all the time so as not to hurt people or to be respectful. My kids school they call teachers by their first name but for a while they went to school in Fla and were asked to call them ‘miss x’. That was forced speech. But whatev. That was important to those teachers

I’m a dem. I don’t want to list my pronouns either and never have. No one has ever made me or even asked me to.

I know some companies have asked employees to or offered online bio space to, but that is at private companies. As a fed, I’ve never been required to list my pronouns. I don’t think the government is requiring this of anyone and because we have civil rights laws protecting gender discrimination, I think it would be unlawful for even a private company to force you to identify your gender against your will.

It’s simply not honest to refuse to recognize that use of preferred pronouns is compelled in many circumstances now, with often horrifying consequences. Here is one:

First of all, some of these examples are mere political talking points. And so far from factual, it's unbelievable.

1) Pandemic- your kid in this area was out for the Spring of 2020 and had the option to go back that fall. You could transfer, homeschool, etc. R's love to crow about "personal responsibility" so take it here. YOU had choices. Further, you are overgeneralizing. My kid is FINE after the pandemic, academically and socially. We were not hands off to either and took responsibility for both of those things. And schools here in VA are not unionized-so that's a lie.
2) The "trans rights" oppression is a made up issue. Trans are human beings and so they do, in fact, have rights. You don't have to like it. But, it's not too much for people to ask you to not be a bigoted a$$hat. I have friends, kids of friends, friends of my child etc. who are trans, on the LGBTQ spectrum, non-binary . . . . all of the things. It doesn't affect me. Doesn't affect you. This is YOUR bogeyman. Human rights should not be up for a vote. Period.
3) I agree homelessness is a problem but NEITHER party has been remotely effective at dealing with it. You casting it as a Dem problem is just another big, fat lie.
4) "Defund the Police" was a ridiculous slogan, I agree. But it was weaponized by the right as something it wasn't. THis has been explained ad nauseum. Further, the right does not ever get to crow about supporting the police given J6 and the pardon of those people.

Progressives have empathy for people in situations they cannot help. Not for people who make mean spirited choices as a result. Not all bad choices are mean spirited.

I’m not the PP but I fundamentally do not believe progressives have empathy. I believe what they have is ego, where the most important thing to them is appearing to have empathy. But they do not have actual empathy.

I say this as someone who used to call herself a progressive liberal, but has become deeply disillusioned. I did not vote for Trump but it is insane to me that I even briefly considered it, and it was because of how toxic and poisonous I believe progressives are. I think Biden’s progressivism has been very destructive and, to the point of this thread, not at all empathetic, and I did not see distance between Harris and Biden.
