Underrated gems in VA for B student

So far, thank you for the helpful responses. We are going to look at:

Longwood
CNU
WVU

Are there any others that would be a good fit for a sporty mainstream child that are akin to JMU/Penn State/VT but more for a B profile student?

This year my 2.5/2.7 (NOT KIDDING) was accepted by ECU, WVU, ODU, Radford and GA Southern. Deferred to RD from EA at Coastal Carolina.

But when someone calls a school open-access, nothing but ridicule. Go figure.

I don't know what your financial situation is, but Radford has this program to cover tuition under $100K HHI

ODU tried to put my child into their new bridge program, but theirs isn't set up like Radford's.

Radford does room and board and transport while students do classes at the local community college.

ODU's is set up more like GMU's programs for NVCC students, which doesn't provide the same type of benefits.

Still deciding. Trying to weigh the potential "loss" of ten of thousands of dollars versus getting the kid out of this house for betterment of everyone's sanity.

the campus is quite nice. It has one of the nicest rec centers we toured. they also just built a lovely new building that houses quite a few departments, including one of the prettiest dance studios in the country.

the town is not the best, but the current prez encourages cooperation with VT, less than half an hour away. there is a radford student section at VT football games.

I will make sure DC tours it. Like I said, this kid is very unlikely to go against mainstream thinking so if they think something will get mocked, they'll avoid and coming from NOVA, I am sure they've heard a lot of crap on Radford.

I understand

our child went off and is now on academic probation, heading into her make or break semester. she sadly didn't take advantage of the academic resources available to her until it was too late first sesmeter.

Not in VA, but maybe consider Miami of Ohio. 80%+ acceptance rate, leans conservative, very traditional in terms of sports, Greek life, cute college town.

What's his test scores? Is he a B student because he's a slacker, and may find himself in college, or is he a B student because he may be reasonably hard-working but with some special needs or is just not the sharpest tool in the shed? For the former, GMU/JMU seems like a better place, maybe CNU as well. For the latter, Longwood.

OP here. They're a B student because of multiple Learning Disabilities that are well documented by an IEP. They work incredibly hard but the FCPS 70/30 grading policy has presented challenges this year. We will be looking at a solid B GPA when applying next year and kid wants a traditional college experience away from NOVA - so ruling out GMU, Marymount and NVCC. Kid also doesn't want emo/artsy schools so smaller liberal arts with quirky kids won't be up their alley.

I have questions! LOL. What are the emo/artsy schools you are avoiding? Why the disdain for the quirky people out there? They will be at every university and workplace for the rest of your DC's life. Better to learn to coexist now rather than struggle later.

+1 Intolerance is not a good look.

DP. Tell us, oh "tolerant" ones - did your quirky kids seek out large, sporty universities? No? Why not?

Seriously!!! It's ok for a kid to want to avoid the artsy emo vive schools. This isn't about tolerance.

Other options for state schools:

-Old Dominion U (at the beach)
-Longwood (although I find the town waaaay too creepy)

SLACs:

-Shenandoah U (has the music conservatory but also very sports science oriented)
-Roanoke College seems like it would be a good fit
-Randolph Macon, cute town and kind of the prototypical small school
-U of Lynchburg cut a ton of programs lately so IDK but that's another "B students who are happy-go-lucky people" option

You think Farmville is creepy? Why?

Went to Longwood. Ended up getting hired at tech company as did others. This is another troll.
