The DCUM Book Club
| Reading “The Book of Love” by Kelly Link. I’d heard of her but never read her before. Enjoying it a lot. |
DP -- for me, both All Fours by Miranda July and Ripe by Sarah Rose Etter fell into the INTERESTING category. I love hearing people's stories, and contemplating how they think what they think and do what they do. Both held relatable aspects, and I liked them enough to add them to my bookshelves of keepers, though I'm not sure I'll ever read them again. They both held a little of the fascination of being human in shared but unique experiences. I would recommend reading both if you're looking to change things up a little in your to-read list. |
Exactly!! It was very captivating. |
So I did not love it. It felt emotionally manipulative to me, kind of how I felt about Dear Edward a couple years ago. |
I loved the premise of this book but it felt like a huge slog to me. I should have abandoned it. Just finished Beautyland. So good |
| The Maidens by Alex Michaelides |
Ok so I’m maybe 1/3 into it and…it’s starting to lose me. The plot hasn’t progressed at all. And it’s not exactly what I’d called dense or wordy, but it feels like pages go by with nothing but characters thinking or talking in circles. Sorry to hear that it doesn’t get better? |
I'm a DP who would also describe The Book of Love as a slog. And it wasn't about the length, I love a long book. It just felt like so much nothing. |
I DNFed Beautyland about 80 pages in. It was just annoying to me. But it's not due back to the library for a few more days so your post is inspiring me to try again because I very much agreed with your opinion of The Book of Love. |
I’m the one you quoted. I did feel like Beautyland got a little repetitive (though more towards the end) but overall really loved it. I would say if you are annoyed at 80 pages, it might not be for you. It is an odd little book. |
Agree (with last PP). First 1/3 of the book was excellent in terms of the initial story & scene setting… but by the end it was almost color-by-number tear-jerker. |
| The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. My first John le Carré novel. |
|
The First Fifteen Lives of Henry August. It’s good fun so far, and a nice follow from The Ministry of Time, which I enjoyed very much.
And it was recommended to me by my ChatGPT book recommendation bot, so I’m doubly amused at how much I’m enjoying it. It knows me and my tastes well! |
This sounds good and is currently available on Libby. |

Just finished The Good Sister. Not bad, but kinda fell off about 3/4 of the way through.
Read Small things like These today & loved it. The Bee Sting is still the best book I’ve read this year, though, so I’m looking for something else equally captivating. |
