Because, simply. she is the GOAT. No ifs, why, but about it.

She’s really good, but she lacks the ethereal grace and softness of classical gymnasts.

You mean the waif-like under 16 year old from the Karoly era?

You are putting words in the poster's mouth.

The gymnastics of today is artless and imprecise.

You can:
-call me a terrible person
-say well since I am an athlete what do I know
-call me stupid

And I still stand by what I said.

The gymnastics of today is powerful and thrilling.

Agree! It's amazing to watch what gymnasts are capable of when they are given the autonomy to feed and take care of their bodies long enough to stay in the sport for 10+ years. It's just a level of athleticism that the gymnasts of the 90s weren't given the opportunity to reach. As a lifelong USA gymnastics fan, I'm so happy to see it. Watching those women CELEBRATE at the end of their routines, my god it's incredible. [/qusay.

Why would I be impressed or entertained by this? You sound like an NBC announcer--"look they are so happy! Look they are hugging wow!"

In the Karolyi days, after a good routine, they often looked relieved that just maybe they might not be berated for a minute.

Today, they can rejoice.

After their boring mediocre routines.

Why can't we have both--excellent and excitement? Should the mere fact they are excited mean anything?

There needs to be far more coverage of things like archery, shooting, and heck, even skateboarding if we are going to watch sports with judges. Gymnastics is so boring and lame.

Keep your misery to yourself. Sour puss.

Gross. Not you but Pp before you. Preferring an anorexic, child bodied shell.

I literally don't care if you're impressed or entertained? It makes me joyful and I love watching it. That announcer you're talking about is Laurie Hernandez, a former gymnast and teammate to Biles, and hearing the joy in her voice as she re-lives it is fun to me.

Are you the OP? Why did you even start this thread? I'll never understand people who think anyone cares about their sour old opinions.

I can go to the playground and see little kids bopping around having fun. This type of dynamic is supposed to excite me? The coverage of this Olympics is so childlike, we are supposed to be so enthralled that these athletes are having fun and smiling and hugging and waving to their parents and the sports themselves, and what is required for excellence is not important.

Just say it. You mean she’s not white. Gymnasts have never displayed “softness.”

The white gymnast on the U.S. team plod around, miss landings, and lack artistry also. They are all the same.

I thought at least she'd have a chance to go on bars but I understand why they went with Jordan and Suni instead. I mostly feel bad for her because she didn't qualify for any of the apparatus finals so her Olympics is effectively over. Probably a bit deflating.

I do feel bad for her because it must be weird to basically be following the rotation just to cheer your teammates on. And probably compounded by the fact that they are all older and have competed together before so know each other very well -- she probably feels like the odd one out in a way that Jade for instance doesn't even though she only competed on vault and then was done for the day.

But on the other hand since she's only 16 and this experience will be a huge growing experience for her. The rest of the team is for sure at their last Olympics (I guess never say never but it's hard to imagine any of these women coming back in 4 years) so in Los Angeles if Hezly stays healthy and does what she needs to do she'll be the veteran on that team. This is really just the beginning of her Olympic journey.

Don’t feel sad for Hezly. She is an Olympic gold medalist for life!

I take the power and athleticism of today’s gymnasts over the anorexic era.

Why does it have to be power and athleticism with more grace and fluidity. No one is missing anorexia. Stop projecting your BS onto other posters.

There is no doubt that in one sense, Simone is the most athletic and acrobatic of the group. She does the most difficult moves on many of the apparatuses. However, she also is imprecise and artless. It is all power and no finesse.

It's actually for that reason I would love to see Suni Lee win the gold in the individual all around. At these games she seems more fluid and graceful than Simone.

Sorry, meant to say why does it have to be power and athleticism without also having grace and fluidity. Biles does amazing tumbles, but she is herky jerky and misses a lot of her landings. One part of gymnastics is also control. Anyway, not saying she is not great, but for some of us she is not as enjoyable to watch.

And some of us are in awe of what she can do…such a joy to witness.

Former gymnast here and I agree with this PP and OP. The sport has become ugly and boring. Go watch videos of Nadia Comenici's 1976 routines for comparison. (for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h60cf63AyYw&ab_channel=USAGymnastics)

I find Suni Lee’s work to be beautifully graceful, and it brings me great joy as a former gymnast to see adult, healthy women competing in a sport formerly dominated by abused, starving babies. I love seeing these women come into their own with power, grace, and confidence - especially survivor Simone Biles

Every time I see comments like this I know they’re from someone completely ignorant of the sport. Nobody talks like this about snowboard tricks. You want them to be athletes but on your terms, not the terms of the actual sport. There is so much more to a vault than the stuck landing, but average viewers know so little about preflight, post flight, the block, form in the air, etc that they can’t even assess those things and just focus on a .1-.3 landing step. You sound ridiculous to anyone who knows even a little bit about the sport. Like saying Tom Brady (or trout if you want to do baseball) lacks the flair of Mahomes (or Harper) and isn’t fun to watch.
