Only jerks don't try to isolate when they have COVID.

I work with elderly people. I'm testing so I don't kill anyone.

This poster claims they are testing so they "don't kill anyone". Basically they are saying anyone who goes out while testing positive is a murderer.

People are still dying from Covid. If someone knowingly has Covid, or strongly suspects it and does nothing, you very well could be part of a serious or fatal infection chain. I can't imagine not masking if I was infectious and around others. Same with flu.

Just highlighting this response for the poster who says "nobody is suggesting isolating for more than 10 days".

They said masking, not isolating. What they are saying is their personal belief, in any event. Do you deny that if you are out and about with COVID and are around people, you could transmit it to other people?

Anybody can transmit COVID at any time because anybody can be asymptomatic at any time.

If you are feeling better after having COVID, the odds of transmitting are very, very low.

I don't care if people mask, but yeah I think people who think I am a murderer because I didn't mask on Day 10 are ridiculous, sad people.

I don't think you are a murderer, but I think it's ridiculous and sad for you not to care enough about others if you know you are likely infectious.

Feeling fine on Day 10? No, I am not "likely infectious". You are making sh&t up so you can feel superior to other people.

If you are on Day 10 and test and have a red line, are you masking or not? We know YOU won't test on Day 10 b/c you think it's insane, but let's say you test and it's dark red. What are you going to do? Based on that, refer to my comment above.

There's literally no point to testing that far out if I am feeling fine and didn't take Paxlovid. If I'm not feeling fine, then that's different.

My point was if you have reason to think you are infectious (very positive test, or if you still have symptoms) are you masking? That's what makes or breaks you being a selfish jerk. It's that simple. I test because I work with kids and they have two big school trips coming up this week and next. My tests are crazy dark, so yeah, I'm testing up to Day 10 even though I feel better, because Michael Mina and others have said it's a good proxy for infectiousness. I don't want to be the one who spreads the FLIRT variant around the two best weeks of school - so yeah, I'm extra cautious. That doesn't make me superior - I think that's basic human consideration. I also mask for ten days after the flu - it's not a big sacrifice for me, and can help ensure others don't get sick.

Yeah… you’re testing because you want two weeks off from school.

Or, because their simple illness can hurt many students, parents and their families who have health issues, are older, etc.

The problem is that you see this whole discussion as being about who is a "selfish jerk" and who is not, and I thought we were actually talking about the extent to which rapid antigen tests say you are infectious or not. You clearly are not capable of having a discussion about this without resorting to insulting people. Do you get that you are convincing nobody of anything except that you are an angry person?

My comments were in response to the person who said people were calling them a murderer. I responded that I didn't think they were a murderer, but if you have information that you are likely infectious and do nothing, you are not being a good citizen. Plenty of people agree with me.

So, again, you're an angry person who can't discuss issues of public health without making it about how you are a good citizen and other people are not.

I mentioned Michael Mina in reference to rapid tests serving as proxy for infectiousness. You've conveniently ignored that in your attempt to put me in some angry person box.

If you spread something that you know can be deadly, and a person died because you selfishly spread it to them.. then what do you call that? You are looking for a free pass on your selfish behavior? What if it was your family member who died because of someone else being selfish and "had" to go to the store, restaurant, etc....ever consider who you might hurt?

Okay, do you want to talk about this now and are you done proclaiming who is a good citizen and who is not?

Yes, many people in the field have said rapid tests are an indicator of infectiousness. They say that because it's the only tool we had and it was better than literally everyone staying home. Not because it definitely means a person can transmit COVID. A faint line on Day 1 is more dangerous than a darker line on Day 6.

I'm a sub at my kid's school. I literally don't get paid if I don't work, but nice try to bash teachers.

Okay so you don’t want to sub for two weeks and want a legitimate excuse to justify to your partner why you’re not earning money.

I’m picturing Zoolander and his black lung cough.

My husband is working for NATO and we are overseas where there aren't jobs in my field, but feel free to come back with yet another jerky retort.

Oh do tell in which NATO country you’re located where anyone would expect you to test for Covid anymore, let alone self-isolate for 10 freaking days.

So then you admit that a previous poster is correct- you’re doing all of this FOR YOU because nobody around you cares to keep pretending that Covid is the boogeyman anymore. (Hint: if in your current environment people are actively hostile to masking, then the current variant is absolutely going to be spread around your school regardless of whether or not you selflessly martyr yourself and isolate for the next month…)

They do help with the spread. Grow up.

Doctors who don't mask with high risk patients suck.

Unless you can't take it for some reason, why would anyone not get Paxlovid? The criteria to qualify are so broad that literally anyone can qualify. The government bought so much that they couldn't use it all before it expired. When I used it last year, the expiration date had been extended. I was using a prescription that had already expired based on it's original expiration date but not based on the extension. It still worked fine. I got better quickly. Then I got a rebound infection that felt like mild allergies for a couple of days (a lot of people talk about the rebound infections but mine was nothing).

Do people not know that you can get Paxlovid really easily?

I know a couple of people who took Paxlovid and they had really bad side effects. I would not take it unless I had a high risk condition. And it's not uncommon for people with high risk conditions to take drugs with which Paxlovid is contraindicated.

DH and I - late 50's - just got Covid for the 2nd time. First time it was "just a cold" but this time we both got very sick - fever, GI symptoms, endless coughing and congestion. DH's oxygen got down to 95% on the 2nd day so he got Paxlovid - it worked, but he did get mild rebound symptoms and tested positive >2 weeks (he has to test negative before going back to office). I was positive for about 10 days. My heart rate is still elevated 2 weeks later - don't know what that means.

Agree with OP that seems to be a different animal. Very strange virus.

I also lost my smell and taste, and got "Covid tongue" where my tongue was sore and burning. Not fun, and I've lost about 5 pounds.
