If not good, why does SYC get mentioned or trashed so much on DCUM? There must be something there to be raised all the time.

That’s the SYC model.

As someone else also posted, every academy gets trashed on this board.

If you were to ask my opinion about SYC, they get trashed because of their lack of player development.

They do a great job of recruiting and using the MLS brand to pull players from other academies. They stay relevant by continually pulling talent from other clubs in the area, but they don't develop current players or improve the players that join the academy.

I watched 2 games a week ago for their U16 (vs. Queen City Mutiny) and U19 (vs Arlington) MLS Next teams. I was not involved with any of the teams that were playing; I just had some time to kill and thought the games would be fun to watch. In both cases, SYC showed great skill on the ball, but over dribbled and consistently lost the ball to more disciplined and well coached teams. I have seen both of these SYC teams over the years and these are the same mistakes that I have seen in the past when the players were younger.

For instance the U19 Arlington team, which won 2-0 over SYC, moved the ball consistently with one and two touches, made runs through the SYC defense, and consistently stopped the over-dribbling SYC players. SYC only created one "real" scoring opportunity the whole game, and Arlington's goalie had very little work to do. Arlington on the other hand, kept consistent pressure on SYC's goal and easily could have had a couple of additional goals.

The SYC boys on their top teams are athletic and some have amazing individualistic skill, which does win them some games, but at the high school ages, when players should be refining their team play and technical skills, I see that their players have not progressed past the "let's try to dribble the ball around several defenders" stage of development.

Just my opinion on how I think the game should be played.

You nailed it. And this is a microcosm of what is wrong with US youth soccer. It's a team sports that does require athleticism but there is so much more to the game from a tactical standpoint. SYC is going for the short-term gains and cares little about putting kids in the best position to play the game at a high level for a long time. If you want a basement full of U14 trophies, it's a great place to go. If you want to play at high level college or pro, you'd be better off going to an environment that teaches the game holistically.

It is true. SYC does not develop players. Many of their players train without side coaches.

So I'm curious. Since SYC does not develop players, which clubs do?

IMO - Arlington, NVA, VDA, Bethesda - though they all have their own ups and downs. Families should sign a one-year contract with the coach best for their kid's development and reassess every year. Arlington seems to have the best overall group of coaches. Bethesda has a monopoly on talent in Montgomery County. VDA plays hungry, and is more blue collar than Arlington and other places. NVA produces results if you can survive the politics. Generalizations with exceptions - but that's what you'll hear and experience from many.

Part of development is being able to play against high level of competition and practice with teammates that are similarly competitive and focused. So Bethesda is the only one I would consider in the list above. We’ve not considered ECNL/EDP 1 clubs because the players want to play in high school and don’t seem to take their training seriously (DS observation after practicing with a few of them over the years).

You can tell SYC only cares about their win status, just take a peek at their IG stories.
