I think this debate is always really hilarious. Let's be honest, MLS Next and ECNL are comparable. The best from both leagues are relatively even and the worst are just as.
Trying to loop in MLS Academy teams with the discussion of MLS Next is a problem. The league is tiered for a reason. They are not the same. The only difference comes from recruiting and that is simply that if your son plays on an MLS Next team and happens to be at a big event they may get a look from a scout who is already there recruiting from the MLS academies. Both sides of this argument are unfounded and utterly ridiculous. |
Is it unfounded that the USYNT is almost 100% MLS Next players? Is it unfounded that the rosters of top college soccer programs have majority MLS Next players? (outside International transfers) Is it unfounded that the MLS Next teams are playing Fall and Winter against the best and best average competition while ECNL spends one season off? |
*fall and spring |
It is unfounded that you are worried about the national team. Your son isn't going to need to worry about that, and neither is mine. The top college soccer programs are not majority MLS Next players. Have you been on a D1 college soccer staff? I have. Stop embarrassing yourself. |
Lol So only if the PP's son is in the USYNT pool, it makes it legitimate that only MLS Next and International Academy players are in USYNT? Where do most D1 soccer players outside International transfers come from today? (I don't know) |

Not everybody cares about D1. It's really not the end all be all.
My kid has no interest in the big D1 programs-where playing is a 24-7 job and school is on the side. He knows he has at most 5 years of soccer left. He's not going pro. He's thinking long term and wants a high academic school where he can play soccer (which he happens to enjoy and is pretty good at) but also set himself up for the rest of his life with a strong education experience. Players have different interests when considering their future. Not all are looking for the best team or the most scholarship-which are largely limitd to Academy and International or transfer these days. Some just want a boost in admission for a college they might not been able to qualify for without the soccer. Entry to an ivy or strong academic school (MIT, JH, etc) without a scholarship is a win for some based on their priorities... |
I never had such clarity when I was 17 Your lucky |
| Our NVA boys 0-0 DCU, we can hang with the best of them. |
which tournament? |
Preseason friendly where DCU brought a mix of u15/u14. |
Yeah. Not ecnl lol |
Play them when they using starters and actual real lineups then tell us how it goes. Preseason mis-match lineups aren't for winning games. Obviously. |
NVA. LOL. |
we beat syc, tie dcu, no other teams in dmv can compete. |
Heard a NVA team got destroyed yesterday by a team with several players playing up 6+ GA |
