Are you Charles Allen? Then, yes. You’re the only person like that.

I would definitely pick it over Cleveland Park.

Thoughts?

We bought in CC and a friend in Petworth years ago. Friend did lottery and won spot in same jklm schools as our kid so other than the commute they were doing well. Fast forward ten years and the pandemic started and the situation deteriorated. After friend had to duck to the floor a couple of times because there was a shooting outside, friend sold house and moved to a smaller place in CC two years ago. I cannot afford Cleveland park but i would buy there a million times more than in Petworth. I dont GAF about lively if it entails having my kids risk getting hit by a stray bullet while on the porch

I have no time for anyone who says “jklm” schools. So pretentious.

what is a jklm school

Raised my children here (lotteried into WOTP schools, although I see more and more neighborhood folks walking their kids to local schools each morning). Crime, while not great, is not the hellscape some try to describe. It's a great neighborhood that is accessible to other parts of the city and it's easy to get into Maryland

You’re likely just used to the crime. ANY shootings in a residential neighborhood is unacceptable and not a place to raise a family. There is notably higher crime in Petworth and anyone choosing to live there has either low standards or is delusional.

NP. People live in Petworth for many reasons, not due to low standards. Petworth is in a great location, in addition neighbors are very nice and down to earth (unlike you.)

I agree that Petworth seems lovely. And should be. But he crime stats and the stories out of Petworth are chilling. So what gives and what would make the change? There are two historic Council recalls in the works and the crime bill just passed? What are the issues? What will make the difference? There is no reason any part of DC should put fear in anyone. I love Petworth for its relative affordability, fun spaces and nice houses, and nice people. But then what happens? Is the crime from within or comes into the locale and why?

Much of the violence comes from street crews/gangs that are located up and down 14th St and Georgia Ave and in adjacent neighborhoods.

In Petworth area there are the following crews (or so I gather): 3500, which operates in SW Petworth and northern Columbia Heights; 1-4 Zone, farther north on 14th St; Rock Creek, just SE of the metro, and 640, south of there; 5th/7th n Taylor, NE of the metro; Hilltop around 2nd and Upshur; CRT, around 9th and Crittenden; and of course the infamous KDY crew on Kennedy St. And I think there are even a few others that I’m missing!

You can read more about the crews and associated violence here: https://cjcc.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/cjcc/release_content/attachments/DC%20Gun%20Violence%20Problem%20Analysis%20Summary%20Report.pdf

That was the initial report I read on the violence, and it looks like they’ve released an update with new data: https://nicjr.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/NICJR-GVPA-Summary-Report-January-2024.pdf

All of this waxing on about crime, but it's the drivers and the overbuilt roads we should actually be worried about.

No, this is a much more real risk. People drive like maniacs in this city.

So for the heck of it, I have been googling “best neighborhoods in DC“ and not once, in any article, anywhere, anyhow, have I seen Cleveland Park. Not once. You may disagree with the various lists that pop up, but it’s interesting that Cleveland Park never pops up even once in any article! I guess that’s because it is, well, boring.

Obviously, both Logan Circle and Petworth pop up frequently.

My husband and I lived in Petworth for almost 20 years (before we had to move for my job) and our son was born there. It's a lovely, close-knit and friendly neighborhood. Yes, there's crime there but unlike everywhere else in DC I've experienced no property crime living there - not a single car break-in in 18 years. Meanwhile in other supposedly fancier neighborhoods my friends have had people kick in the basement door of their house while they were asleep upstairs (Logan Circle) and another friend actually had people saw a hole in the roof of her house to break in while she was out of town (Capitol Hill). I had 5+ car break-ins per year living in Dupont Circle in the early 2000s then not a single one in nearly 2 decades in Petworth. It's also one of the only neighborhoods I've lived in DC where I knew every single one of my neighbors. The area is full of families with little kids - our kid is one of 12 born on our block while we lived there. Upshur Street also became a very lively area full of new restaurants while we lived there...there was so much good food in walking distance compared to where I live now (mainly $1M homes and strip malls, sigh). YMMV but I loved our time in Petworth.

Yep. It's hilarious to see all the Karens clutching their pearls about the "danger" of shootings in Petworth (has a gentrifier kid literally ever been shot in Petworth? I doubt it.) while they objectively increase the odds of their kid dying by moving to the suburbs where they have to be driven everywhere and even when they walk they do it on dangerous, pedestrian-unfriendly infrastructure.

It’s a matter of time isn’t it before someone eats a bullet, if they’re flying around so liberally. There was just a shooting on the metro there, again!

The father who built the basketball hoop for the neighborhood kids to use was almost killed by those same kids. I think he’s having some lifelong consequences from the beating on his porch.

So, no, I don’t think I’d move there now. But it shouldn’t stay like that. No one wants to live like that. The gang thing is real.

Were the two teens ever prosecuted?

Very similar experience. I love Petworth. Very friendly neighbors, walkable, lots of trees.
